East Tyrol is that of North Tyrol through Italian territory and the State of Salzburg separate eastern part of the Austrian state Tyrol. It covers the area between the Hohe Tauern in the north (Glockner and Venediger groups) and the Carnic Alps in the south.
The division of Tyrol after the First World War brought East Tyrol to an economic and tourist edge, which only seems to have been overcome since Austria joined the EU.

The high mountain region of East Tyrol essentially consists of the East Tyrolean Oberland, the Lienz valley floor and the Iseltal.

The cheapest starting point for a tour of the area is Lienz.
In order to really get to know the region, it is advisable to use your own vehicle.
Tourist Attractions
- Defereggen Heilwasser bottling building. At this place of power you get to know the history of the Deferegger healing water, at the end of the excursion you can inspect the integrated stalactite cave.
- Aguntum. Aguntum is an ancient Roman city located east of Lienz. The 18-meter-high observation tower offers a view of the excavation site. You can then take a look at ancient finds in the museum.
- Aigner Badl. In the only farmer's bath in East Tyrol (since 1772) you can still take a therapeutic bath against joint pain, rheumatism, etc. in the calcium sulfate mineral healing spring. There is also a snack station with Tyrolean specialties.
- Tauer Alpine Dairy. The dairy is located at the entrance of the Gschlösstal, embedded in a wonderful mountain backdrop. Tastings and visits to the dairy are possible.
- Heinfels Castle. The castle is located above Heinfels and is currently in the renovation phase.
- The last James Bond relic. In 2015 the James Bond film "Specter" was shot in Obertilliach. A wooden hut from the shooting can still be seen today.
- Rabenstein castle ruins. The ruin high above Virgen is a popular destination for hikers, because the castle offers a great panoramic view.
- Debanttal. The Debanttal is 16 km long and has a range of species of wild animals and mountain plants. It is also the starting point for the nature and culture trail that leads to the Lienzer Hütte and as a hike to the Wangenitzseehütte.
- Deferegger Machlkammer. There you will find handcrafted unique items by local artisans.
- Galitzenklamm. The Galitzenklamm is an adventure park. There are various via ferratas (with different levels of difficulty), a water playground, a climbing park and a snack station.
- Glocknerhaus Kals. In the Glocknerhaus everything revolves around the Großglockner. Topics such as the landscape, alpinism, flora and fauna are explained there with texts and videos.
- Gschlösstal. The Gschlösstal is an untouched valley. There you get a glimpse of the glacier world around the Großvenediger. The rock chapel is located in Innergschlöss.
- Jagdhausalm. The alp is located at 2,009 m above sea level and with its 17 stone houses and the Maria-Hilf chapel is one of the oldest alpine pastures. The pasture is also called "Little Tibet".
- Kalser Glocknerstrasse. There you can take a closer look at the Großglockner (King of the Mountains).
- Ködnitztal. The Ködnitztal is the starting point for climbing the Großglockner.
- Carriage & local history museum. This museum has a large collection of carriages and sleighs from different eras.
- Loacker world of pleasure. There you can stop off at the Loacker Moccaria, buy a waffle or chocolate specialty in the branded store or join the hands-on pastry shop.
- Matrei National Park House. The natural and cult history of the national park can be experienced on two floors.
- Oberstaller Alm. It is a listed alpine pasture with 18 wooden alpine huts and a chapel. A circular hike leads to the Klapfbach waterfall viewing platform.
- East Tyroleans. The alpine roller coaster is 2.7 km long and extends from the Moosalm to the Hochstein Arena.
- Pichler's world of chocolate. Experience hand-scooped chocolate up close in Sillian.
- Bruck Castle. Schloss Bruck is the home of the painter Albin Egger-Lienz, where many of his works are exhibited. There is also a cafe there.
- Weissenstein Castle. Weißenstein Castle is approx. 900 years old and is located above Matrei on a limestone rock. The castle is privately owned, but you can take a stroll through the castle garden.
- Staller saddle. The Staller Sattel is a mountain pass and connects the Defereggental (East Tyrol) with the Antholzertal (South Tyrol). The Obersee and an inn can be found at the Staller Sattel.
- Umbalfalls. On the nature trail, you can experience the glacier stream with its cascading steps.
- Villgrater nature. The Villgrater Natur Haus offers numerous products from sleeping systems to culinary specialties and handmade gifts.
- Vitalpinum. On 6500 m² you can experience herbs with all your senses. A show distillery, the feel-good garden with sensory stations, the playground and the shop with Unterweger products are for young and old.
- Pilgrimage church limestone. The church was built in 1660 and can be visited in any weather. It is also the starting point for numerous walks in limestone (Innervillgraten).
- Pilgrimage church Maria Schnee. The pilgrimage church was built in 1456 and is unique with its late Gothic frescoes. Guided tours are possible.
- Sillian Gnome Park. Gnome = dwarf, brownie. The "mountain for dwarfs" offers children numerous activities. (Mini golf, gnome train, high rope course, and much more).
- Assling Wildlife Park. Over 100 animals can be found in the 80,000 m² wildlife park. There is also a summer toboggan run and a playground.
- Zedlacher paradise. The path leads through a 600 year old larch forest with different stations on the subject of the forest, its animals and the ecosystem.
