Val Pusteria - Pustertal

The Val Pusteria (ital. Val Pusteria, lad. Val de Puster) is one of the largest alpine valleys and is located in South-Tirol. The valley is an industrial region, main traffic artery, holiday region and winter sports area.

  • 1 Mühlbach (South Tyrol) (Ital. Rio di Pusteria), at the entrance to the Puster Valley with the districts of Meransen, Spinges and Vals
  • 3 Kiens (784 m), with Schöneck Castle and Ehrenburg Castle in the Ehrenburg district;
  • 5 Brunico (838 m), capital of the Puster Valley,

The valley runs from the east (austrian Border) with a length of about 60 km to the west and lies at an altitude of about 1600 to about 700 m Zillertal Alps and to the south of the Dolomites limited. The valley flows into the west side Eisack Valley.

The main rivers are the Rienza and the Drava.

In the street

  • Of north over the Brenner Pass and from south out Trent and Bolzano Coming to the west side of the Puster Valley: Via the A22 motorway to the Vahrn exit north of Brixen and from here directly onto the road in the direction of Val Pusteria.

By train

Pustertalbahn

In Brixen almost all international trains (EC) on the Brenner railway line Munich-Verona stop. From here regional trains run every hour to Franzensfeste (above Brixen), with a connection to the Pustertal (Pustertalbahn);

  • The Pustertalbahn leads from Franzensfeste (Ital. Fortezza) through the Pustertal after San Candido (Ital. San Candido).
Stations are: Aicha (Natz-Schabs), Mühlbach (South Tyrol) (Italian Rio di Pusteria), Vintage, St. Sigmund (Kiens), St. Lorenzen (South Tyrol), Brunico, Olang, Welsberg Taisten, Niederdorf (South Tyrol) and Dobbiaco.

The line was extended to Lienz.

Tourist Attractions

  • The 1 Earth pyramids near Oberwielenbach in Percha ended a few hundred years ago by a landslide. By washing out the side slopes, column formations were left with the stones lying on them. They are constantly changing due to further erosion, so you can see what they look like every few years. At the earth pyramids there is a paved path with viewpoints.
  • Bunker of the Italian Alpine Wall. The blocking group Olang - Lawn where 19 systems were planned and partly also implemented in World War II and 9 systems were reactivated during the Cold War. Visits and guided tours are in n8bunker possible.
