The valley is approx. 20 km long and extends from the valley high point, the Kreuzbergpass (1936 m) in the southeast to San Candido in the north-west. The Sesto brook drains the valley and joins it San Candido in the Outside. Since the Drau flows into the Danube, the Sextenbach is the only watercourse in the Dolomites that drains into the Black Sea.
