The vacation spot Grainau is about 5 km west of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and at the foot of the Zugspitze.
background
The community consists of the districts Obergrainau and Untergrainau, and Schmölz and the village of Hammersbach and the hamlet of Eibsee.
The year of the first documentary mention is 1305: Grainau appears in the land register of the Hochstift Freising as "Gruenawe", which means something like the "green meadow". In the Middle Ages, Grainau belonged to the seven original communities of the former imperial "free" county of Werdenfels, and thus to the Bishop of Freising. Because of the extreme location between the mountains, the region was considered rather poor.
A Hammersbacher Hof is mentioned for the first time in 1419 together with the establishment of a hammer forge, in Hell Valley mining was carried out towards the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the 20th century.
With the abolition of church property in the Bavarian secularization in 1802, the County of Werdenfels was transferred to the Electorate of Bavaria (kingdom not until 1806).
With the rise of tourism to the Zugspitze, tourism became the most important economic pillar in the town: Grainau has been accessible with the Bavarian Zugspitzbahn from Garmisch since 1929, and the train has been running to the Zugspitzplatt since 1930. In May 1963, the Eibsee cable car to the summit of the Zugspitze went into operation. On December 21, 2017, the new cable car started operating as a replacement for the Eibsee cable car.

Eibsee

This mountain lake is located four kilometers southwest of Grainau in the valley floor of the upper Loisach valley and between the Wetterstein and the Ammergau Alps still on the property of the community of Grainau and is privately owned. The name derives from the yew trees, there used to be larger populations around the lake. The Eibsee owes its formation to a landslide around 3700 years ago.

The water quality is very good, the Eibsee is a bathing lake, but the water has no Mediterranean temperatures. Surfing, sailing, diving and fishing (fishing license) is allowed. There are motorboat tours and boat rentals. The Eibsee can also be circled on a simple hiking trail.
