The first settlement of the region for the Bronze Age is documented by urn graves. In Roman times, the Via Claudia Augusta leads directly through Imst, there is a street station, and later Imst is always an important trading center.
The place Imst was first mentioned in a document in 763 as “opido humiste”, the term means something like “spring gushing out”, the Bavarians settle in the region. At first Imst belongs to Hohenstaufen and reaches Tyrol in 1266.
From the 15th to the 20th century, mining was also carried out in the region (silver, zinc and lead).
1822 was a disaster year for the whole town of Imst with a major fire in town. The decline in mining initially brought about a general decline in the following.
The Arlbergbahn is opened in 1884, and easier access is a prerequisite for the start of tourism. Imst has had town charter since 1898.
In 1949, on the initiative of Hermann Gmeiner, the world's first SOS Children's Village was set up in Imst am Weinberg.
Today, summer and winter tourism is the most important branch of business for the town and the region in addition to the service sector.
