Stuibenfall

The Ötztal is an approximately 65 kilometer long southern side valley of the Inn Valley in North Tyrol. It separates the Stubai Alps of the Ötztal Alps.

By train

The Ötztal is connected to the railway network via the Arlbergbahn (Innsbruck – Bludenz) with the Ötztal train station at the entrance to the valley. There are no trains in the valley itself.

In the street

The Ötztal can be reached from Austria via the Inntal motorway (A12). The B 186 branches off from the Oberinntal and runs through the entire valley to the border with South Tyrol (Italy). The section from Hochgurgl to the border crossing on the Timmelsjoch forms the Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road and is toll road. The Timmelsjoch is closed in winter and is only open during the day. From the Timmelsjoch you can take the Italian state road 44 to St. Leonhard in Passeier and then on the state road 44 to Merano.

The Ötztaler Verkehrsgesellschaft and the Postbus operate bus routes from Innsbruck and Imst via Ötztal train station to Obergurgl, to the Timmelsjoch, to the Rettenbach and Tiefenbachferner near Sölden and into the side valleys. In winter there is an extensive ski bus service.

Museums in the Ötztal:

  • Ötztal local history and open-air museum. The Ötztal local history and open-air museum in the Längenfeld district of Lehn shows, among other things, ten buildings or structures belonging to a traditional Ötztal farm.Open: regularly only in summer.
  • Ötz Tower Museum. The Ötz Tower Museum (Hans Jäger Collection) is a local history museum for the Ötztal. One focus of the collection is alpine landscape painting.

  • Ötztal cycling marathon. Everybody's cycling marathon with international participation every year at the end of August. The Kühtai passes (2,020 m) are driven, Brenner Pass (1,377 m), Jaufenpass (2,090 m), and Timmelsjoch (2,509 m), total distance approx. 240 km and 5,500 mH. On the day of the race, the routes along the route will be completely closed at times, and significant traffic obstructions can be expected.

In the winter

  • The winter season especially characterizes the upper Ötztal. The big ones Ski areas in Sölden which also include the Rettenbachferner and Tiefenbachferner glacier areas, as well as in Hochgurgl and Obergurgl exert great attraction here.

In summer

  • The outdoor highlight in the Ötztal is that Area 47 in Ötztal Bahnhof, directly at the entrance to Ötztal. Sports (rafting, canyoning, high ropes course), events (concerts, sports and stunt shows), water fun (7000 m² swimming lake with slide park) and accommodation (wooden tipis, lodges). Open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from the end of April to the end of September. When booking an outdoor activity, admission to the water park is included, otherwise adults € 21, teenagers € 13 per day.
  • in the "Mine adventure playground" in Oetz there is around 5,000 square meters of climbing, balancing, sliding and swinging. Access is free, as is parking, and there is a restaurant in the adjacent swimming pool.
  • The "Ötztal Legend Trail" is a three-kilometer hiking trail that starts at the sports field in Huben. The approximately one-hour hike is free and possible all year round; there are sculptures on 14 legends of the region along the way. In the evening the figures are illuminated, the path is gravel and has little height difference. At the end of the hiking trail is the Alpengasthof am Feuerstein, open daily 10:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Tues Ruhr day.
  • The "Piburg Lake" near Oetz is a popular destination for swimmers and hikers. In midsummer, the surface temperature of the very soft water rises to up to 24 ° C. Parking is chargeable. A path leads from the parking lot to and around the lake. At the south end is a bathing area with sunbathing lawns, as well as a rowing boat rental. Gastronomy is available at the lake or in the hamlet of Piburg.
  • The Ötztal has a lot to offer via ferratas. Most Via ferratas in the Ötztal are close to the valley and can therefore usually be done early in the year. The Stuibenfall via ferrata and the Lehner Wasserfall via ferrata, which rise right next to the thundering water masses, are particularly worthwhile!

  • The thermal and wellness bath Aqua Dome in Oberlängenfeld is the only thermal establishment in Tyrol and follows the tradition of a sulfur thermal spring that has been in use since the 16th century.

The traditional regional cuisine in Ötztal generally includes hearty Tyrolean specialties from pork knuckle to cheese spaetzle, game and soups with bacon or cheese dumplings. The snacks in the Ötztal are called "Marende" this includes cheese and bacon, sausage and the Kaminwurz'n.

Regional specialities are products from the Ötztal mountain sheep such as E.g. roast lamb, lamb skewer and the trout from the mountain streams. Fruit and fruit products such as jams, liqueurs and schnapps come from the Haiminger apples and pears from the lower section of the valley Upper Inn Valley. The local cheeses come from cow, sheep and goat.

One Farm shop with a selection of regional products are available in Längenfeld, in the entire Ötztal there are various farm shops for direct marketing of the producers.
