Gries in the Ötztal is actually in the Sulztal, which is an eastern side valley of the Ötztal in the Stubai Alps. The quiet mountain village of Gries is the starting point for activities in the surrounding mountains Stubai Alps.

Gries is via a winding and steep mountain road in the lower part as a cul-de-sac and with a junction from the Ötztalstraße in Ötztal at Längenfeld to be reached after approx. six kilometers. In normal weather conditions, the road is also easy to drive in winter, but winter equipment is strongly recommended due to the incline of the route. The 13 major hairpin bends are all individually named: Sulztal-, Amberger, Grieskogel-, cabinetogelkehre etc.

By plane

The nearest international airports are the Innsbruck Airport (Distance approx. 73 km, an hour's drive) and north of Munich the Munich Airport (also "Franz Josef Strauss", distance approx. 236 km).

By train

The nearest train station is that Ötztalbahnhof (own municipality) near Ötz and 29 kilometers away in Upper Inn Valley located. The station is stop for regional trains innsbruck. Continue by bus or taxi.

  • Approach from the north through the Upper Inn Valley and the toll Inntal motorway A12, exit Ötztal and then about 23 kilometers further on the federal road B186 to shortly before Längenfeld and there turn off to Gries.
  • The approach via the is also toll-free from Germany Fernpass route to Imst and on the "Tiroler Straße" along the Oberinntal (B171, Landstraße !!) and then on the B186 into the Ötztal.

A free parking lot (with toilets) is located behind the village at the ski area.

Pilgrimage Church of Maria Hilf
  • Pilgrimage Church of Maria Hilf. Kaplaneikirche, built in 1655 and enlarged around 1700. Inside is a much-visited image of the Blessed Mother. There is a legend about the big bell of the little church that it was kidnapped by the Längenfelders out of envy, but the bell did not strike in the neighboring village, after which it was brought back to Gries.

  • The place counts 15 km High altitude trail (5 km skating and 10 km classic trail), groomed daily.
  • There is a toboggan run from the Sulztalalm.
  • There is a 5 kilometer toboggan run from the Nissl Alm.
  • Immediately on the eastern outskirts of Gries there is a family-friendly ski area with two small tow lifts. Open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., every Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. there is night skiing.
