mobility

General information about the Transfer route over the Fernpass see also in the corresponding paragraph for State of Tyrol.

For a complete overview of passes, see also the article on the Alpine passes.

Fernpass

The 1 Fernpass (1,210 m) is the high point of the important and busy Austrian Fernpassstraße (B179) Reutte to Imst. The pass is on the connection between the Mieming chain in the east and the Lechtal Alps in the West. At the top of the pass is the hamlet of Fernpass (inn, gas station and souvenir shop), which are the next places Biberwier (989 m) and Lermoos (1.004 m) in the north and Nassereith (843 m) in the south adjoining Gurgltal.

The pass is open all year round and toll-free, especially during the holiday periods, however, with at least brisk Expect traffic volume. The route is curvy and is considered to be accident-prone, because of the course mainly in the forest, the landscape is generally rather unspectacular, on the north side there is a view of the west side of the Wetterstein with the Zugspitze. The maximum gradient of the route is up to 8%.

The Fernpass marks the watershed between Inn and Isar, the geologically relatively young transition owes its formation to a huge landslide around 4,000 years ago and from the western side from the Lorea massif (Lechtal Alps) out. Because of this rock fall, it applies after latest research With a mass of about one cubic kilometer as the third largest known in the Eastern Alps, the valley in the pass area was filled in and the lakes in the area dammed.

The Fernpass is also the station of the historic Roman road Via Claudia Augusta on the section from Biberwier to the hamlet of Fernstein, the historic route is still well preserved here as a mountain path / mule track and is well known.
