Inn - Inn

The Inn is a river that has its source in the Swiss Alps and flows through Austria and Germany.

background

The name Inn comes from the Celtic word "eon" which means "to foam" and testifies to the power that this river brings with it from its wild alpine origins. The name also shows that the inhabitants on both sides of the Inn have Celtic roots, otherwise the name would have long been forgotten.

The Inn has always been a link between the people on its banks. On it goods, ideas and people were brought in both directions, from the Central European area to the Mediterranean area and vice versa.

shipping

history

Passenger shipping

There is currently no passenger shipping on the Inn, despite the tradition as an ancient trade route. The end of shipping on the river sections, which were always risky, were the new and more economical railway lines from the end of the 19th century.

Switzerland

The river arises in Engadine.

Austria

These are regions along the river Upper Inn Valley and the Lower Inn Valley (Tyrol) in North Tyrol. From the confluence of the Salzach, the Inn forms the border again until shortly before Passau Upper Austria (the Innviertel). Austrian city centers in this section: Braunau am Inn, Schärding.

Germany

At Kufstein/Kiefersfelden the Inn crosses the Bavarian-Austrian border, between Kufstein and Erl the German-Austrian state border runs exactly in the middle of the river, then the Inn flows completely on German territory up to the confluence of the Salzach.

Upper Bavarian Regions along the Inn are:

From the confluence of the Salzach north of Burghausen the Inn is again the border river to Austria.

In Lower Bavaria the Inn flows through the region Rottal-Inn with the Lower Bavarian spa triangle;

In Passau the green Inn joins the rather brown water masses of the Danube. Although the Inn carries a larger amount of water with it, the river is no longer called the Inn but the Danube, but the Danube has a larger catchment area and therefore priority.
