Wasserburg am Inn is a small town in Upper Bavaria with an exceptionally well-preserved medieval old town, almost completely enclosed by a bend in the river Inns.

background

The castle was first mentioned as "Wazzerburch" in 1085. From around 1245 onwards, Count Konrad gave the city the "castle law", an early form of city law.

The place owes its importance to the salt trade: The Inn Bridge was the end of the first day's leg of the trade route from Reichenhall and Hallein via Wasserburg, Munich and Landsberg am Lech further to southwest Germany. Thanks to the strategically favorable location on a hill in the middle of the access to the peninsula in the river bend, the ship traffic on the Inn and at the same time the trade route could be controlled from the castle. In 1247, after a 17-week siege by Duke Ludwig, Wasserburg was conquered and from then on remained in the sphere of influence of the Wittelsbachers (inheritance contract). In 1334 the place received city rights.

In the Middle Ages, Wasserburg became the most important transhipment point for trade goods from Austria and the Balkans and quickly became prosperous. In the trading town, arts and crafts also flourished, the rich citizens afforded a large number of representative buildings, which can be admired in the almost intact medieval townscape from squares, arcades and alleys.
