Map of Ehrwald

The municipality of Ehrwald lies in the broad Ehrwald Basin between the mountains of Mieming chain and des Wetterstein Mountains, Ehrwald was first mentioned in a document in 1275. One interpretation of the name is as erro forest in Old High German for "beginning of the forest".

In the Middle Ages, the place is a bit off the Fernpass route, which leads through the neighboring town of Lermoos.

Because of the barren soil Ehrwald is a rather poor farming village, an important gain for the population is therefore the work in the rod industry (haulage) and the production of barrel staves for the salt works in Hall in Tirol. In the 16th century, up to 300,000 barrel staves were transported to Hall every year, and full salt barrels are brought back on the way home.

As a transit area, the region around Ehrwald is also repeatedly the scene of armed conflicts, for example in the Schmalkadian War (1546/47) and in the armed conflicts between Bavaria and the French. During World War II, on August 3, 1944, the largest aerial battle over Tyrol took place in the Ehrwalder Kessel.

Mining was also practiced in Ehrwald from the 16th century until the beginning of the 20th century, with the Igelskar being the center. Ores were mined, but the mining operation was probably never really economical. The Ehrwaldite is a black, porphyry-like rock and was discovered in the Lehnbachgraben above Ehrwald in 1866, specimens can be viewed on site in the local history museum and in the Leali fountain.

Tourism began at the end of the 19th century, the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn opened in 1926, and thanks to its mountain railways, Ehrwald has overtaken the rival neighboring town of Lermoos in tourism and is the most important center of the region, especially in winter.

Districts From Ehrwald, in addition to the main town, are Obermoos with the valley station of the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn and Ehrwald-Schanz at the former customs station, as well as Oberdorf, Unterdorf, Schmiede and Weidach.
