background

history

Oberau is first mentioned in a document in 750 AD. Of importance for the place was the former Roman road from Italy over the Brenner and Innsbruck to Augsburg, which is here in the road over Oberammergau and Schongau and the about Murnau and Weilheim shared. From the 17th century onwards, gypsum mining was an important economic pillar of the population. The gypsum was processed on site and sold to the surrounding area, as well as being floated to Munich via the Loisach and Isar rivers.

The place could only record a low population growth over several centuries, as the barren tan mountain and moorland areas were not able to feed more people. Only when the railway line from Munich and the new Ettaler Bergstrasse opened in 1889 did this change. There were industrial establishments that needed a large number of workers.
