background

The Kochel Monastery was a monastery founded in 739 together with Benediktbeuern. Both monasteries were destroyed during the Hungarian storm in 955, but the monastery in Kochel was no longer rebuilt and the site of Benediktbeuern administration was added.

During the secularization, the Benediktenbeuern monastery was abolished, and the town of Kochel became independent in the subsequent administrative reforms in 1818.

Districts von Kochel are: Altjoch, Brunnenbach, Ort, Pessenbach, Pfisterberg, Ried and Walchensee with Urfeld, Einsiedel and Zwergern;

The center of Kochel with the town hall and the church is located on the north-east bank of the lake. The new development areas then stretch on the east bank of the Kochelsee and along Mittenwalderstrasse as the main road to the south to Kesselbergstrasse.

Tourist Attractions

Kochelsee

The Kochelseee is owned by the Free State of Bavaria and is divided between the areas of the municipality of Kochel (70%) and the municipality Schlehdorf (approx. 30%). The name Kochel is derived from the Latin "cocula" for head, cone or peak. The Kochelsee owes its formation to the glaciers of the last Ice Age, which carved out the lake basin as a hollow. As the lake gradually silted up, a raised bog formed in the northern area, because the lake is also the shallowest here, in winter a layer of ice also forms first on the north bank.

The inflow and outflow of the Kochelsee is the Loisach, the water quality of the cold and oxygen-rich water is considered to be very good. Over the Walchensee power plant (hydroelectric power plant) is the Kochelsee with the higher one Walchensee connected.

The foothills of the Alps in the Kochel Mountains in the south of the lake are Sonnenspitz, Jochberg, Ducal estate and Home garden.

Bathing areas with sunbathing lawns are located at the mouth of the Loisach near Schledorf (47 ° 39 '7 "N.11 ° 18 ′ 46 ″ E) and between Kochel and Altjoch am Kesselberg (47 ° 38 '52 "N.11 ° 21 '45 "E), but the bathing temperatures do not correspond to those in the Mediterranean. Electric boats, pedal boats and rowing boats are available to borrow, motor boats are not allowed. The wind conditions are rather unfavorable for sailing and windsurfing, the ideal area here is close by Walchensee. Diving in the Kochelsee is allowed. In the summer one runs motorboat from Kochel to Schlehdorf.

The lake is rich in fish. Edible fish are brown trout, lake and rainbow trout, whitefish, pike, pikeperch, perch, tench, carp, eel and other species of white fish. There are also several professional fishermen. There are fishing licenses for guests, the Loisach run is a popular fishing area. (Info on www.urlaub-in-schlehdorf.de)
