background

A first settlement is 740 as Seeshoibit in one by the monk Gotschalk from the monastery in Benediktbeuern written document on the limits of monastery ownership is mentioned for the first time, but the document is viewed critically by experts with regard to the author's credibility. In the Middle Ages, Seeshaupt was a farming and fishing village; in 1346 there were nineteen fishermen's estates. From 1353 the place belongs to the Polling monastery, from 1487 to the secularization in 1803 Bernried Monastery.

The biggest catastrophe in Seeshaupt was Major fire in 1815 when almost all buildings were destroyed. The trigger was the landlady of the "Sanktjohanser" tavern in the restaurant "Zur Post", when she was baking a lard pan on fire.

The politically independent municipality was created through the Bavarian administrative reform in 1818.
