background

West view

Iffeldorf is first mentioned in a document under the names Uphelendorf and Uffilindorf at the beginning or middle of the 12th century. The name is interpreted as a settlement of the Uffo clan. The lords of Iffeldorf belong alternately to the retinue of the counts of Andechs, then to the retinue of the Counts of Eschenlohe and after their extinction towards the end of the 12th century to the Lords of Seefeld-Peißenberg. In 1653 the Hofmark Iffeldorf came to the monastery Wessobrunn.

In 1698 a fire destroyed large parts of the village.

In the secularization (1803) the monastery Wessobrunn was abolished and Iffeldorf is assigned to the district of Weilheim.

The independent municipality of Iffeldorf is a member of the Seeshaupt administrative community.

Districts and hamlets of the Iffeldorf municipality are still Eitzenberg, Heuwinkl, Obereurach, Oberlauterbach, Ponholz, Rettenberg, Sanimoor, Schwaig, Staltach, Steinbach, Untereurach and Unterlauterbach.

The Technical University of Munich operates one built between 1986 and 1992 in the center of Iffeldorf Limnological station. The focus of the scientific activities of this institute is applied water protection.

Tourist Attractions

St. Vitus
  • Parish Church of St. Vitus: The current baroque building was built after the almost complete destruction of the previous Gothic building in a large village fire in 1699. The baroque reconstruction was carried out according to plans from the monastery Wessobrunn, 1707 the new church was consecrated. The rococo interior was completed in the middle of the 18th century. Inside the church, the stucco attributed to Franz Xaver Schmuzer from Wessobrunn and the frescoes, signed in 1755 by the painter Johann Jakob Zeiller, are particularly worth seeing Reutte in Tyrol.
More information about the church at the Parish.
  • Maria im Heuwinkl chapel. A late Gothic Madonna from the first Iffeldorfer parish church of St. Vitus, which was initially discarded and forgotten and then placed in a hollow oak on the "Hey Bichl" from 1672, became the goal of a Marian pilgrimage. From 1690 there was a small chapel, but it soon became too small for the pilgrimage. At the instigation of the Wessobrunn monastery, the baroque chapel was built as a round building with domes and two onion domes from 1698 and was consecrated in 1701. The rococo furnishings took place in the 18th century. Particularly worth seeing inside, in addition to the statue of the Virgin Mary, is the high altar from the late Rococo, the side altar and the dome with the stucco work by the Wessobrunn monastery master builder Johann Schmuzer
Location: approx. 500 m east of the town center, branching off from the main street in the town center into Heuwinklstraße.
