Scharnitz is located on the German-Austrian border northwest of Innsbruck. The resort is an important starting point for mountain tours in the Karwendel Mountains.

background

Scharnitz is already in Roman times on an important trade route across the Alps (from Brenner via Innsbruck to the north), the Roman fort "Scarbia" was at that time in the municipality of today's Scharnitz.

The location of the historical Klosters in solitude near Scharnitz is no longer known today, a position is assumed north of Scharnitz in the area at Mittenwald / KlaisThe founding of the monastery is documented for the year 763. Because of the inhospitable location, it will soon (between 769 and 772) after Schlehdorf relocated. A close connection to the Bavarian nobility of the Algilofinger is also assumed.

The trade route also runs in the Middle Ages Venice-augsburg through Scharnitz, the strategically important position in the narrow valley between the mountains of Wetterstein and Karwendel, is secured as access to Tyrol through the Porta Claudia, which was destroyed, rebuilt and destroyed again in the 30 Years War.

The main livelihood in the village is now tourism, with a focus on summer.
