background
The Rofan, also called the Rofan Mountains and formerly known as the Sonnwendgebirge, consists of the individual mountains Unnütz and Guffert in the north and the actual central plateau of the mountains around their highest peak, that is the Hochiss.
The Rofan is bordered in the west by the Achensee Karwendel, in the north from the traffic lights and Weißbach to the Tegernsee mountains, from the Brandenberger Ache in the east to the Brandenberg Alps to and from Tyrolean Lower Inn Valley in the south to the Kitzbühel Alps.
In the Alpine Club division of the Eastern Alps, the Rofan is immediately adjacent to the northeast Brandenberg Alps treated as a common mountain group.
