background

The Mangfall Mountains in the Bavarian Prealps consists of the Tegernsee and Schlierseer Mountains and the Wendelstein Group. Because of the easy accessibility from the greater area Munich the mountains are one of the most popular tourist regions in the Bavarian Alps.

The Tegernsee mountains are the part of the mountains between the Isar in the west and the Tegernsee in the east, the Schlierseer mountains are the part of the mountains around the Schliersee and the Spitzingsee to Inn. The Wendelstein in the Schlierseer Mountains is managed as an independent mountain group. In the south, the border of the mountain region is roughly the national border Tyrol, on the north side the area merges into the foothills of the Alps.

The eponymous Mangfall with its tributaries Rottach, Weißach, Schlierach and Leitzach drains the mountains towards the north and flows into it Rosenheim in the Inn.

Wildlife

The bear in the Mangfall Mountains: Various reports of bear observations in the Bavarian Alps have long been dismissed as hunters' Latin, or ascribed to the late hour of a cozy evening in a hut. But since the summer of 2006 at the latest, when the one from the Adamello-Brenta Nature Park in Italy Trentino immigrated Problem bear Bruno alias JJ1 roamed through large parts of Tyrol and the Alpine region of Bavaria, tearing several sheep and plundering beehives, until he arrived on June 26, 2006 at the Rotwand was shot in the Spitzingsee area, and the bear's huge hiking trails have been occupied ever since.

The first shooting of a bear in 170 years led to a controversial discussion between animal rights activists and human rights activists in Bavaria. The problem bear had lost its natural fear of humans and, as a "harmful bear", had become a danger for animals and humans. The bear itself was stuffed and is now an attraction in the Museum of man and nature in Nymphenburg Palace in Munich;

Also the wolf roams through the mountains again: In autumn 1836 the last wolf was hunted down in the Mangfall Mountains, he was shot by Anton Hohenadl in the Saurissgraben and then exhibited in Tegernsee.

A wolf in the Mangfall Mountains is clearly proven for spring 2010 by genetic analysis of the saliva samples on the cracks of a dead doe. The animal may have come from a pack of approx. 30 animals in the Italian-French Alps; visual contact between the apparently shy predator and humans has not been proven.
