Rottach-Egern is a posh health resort at the south end of the Tegernsee in Upper Bavaria.

background

Rottach-Egern is located on the Egerner Bay on the south bank of the Tegernsee.

history

First mentioned in 748 under Abbot Eberhardt of the Tegernsee Monastery. Until the 19th century, Rottach was a farming and fishing village and until 1803 it was subject to the Tegernsee monastery court. In addition, the place was important as a station on the trade route from Italy over the Achenpass to Bavaria.

In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria, the place Rottach became independent as a municipality in 1818.

While from 1815 in the near Tegernsee the Wittelsbachers stayed in their summer residence to hunt, the place Rottach became from the end of the 19th century Summer retreat of the artists. At that time the meeting point of the Friends of Artists around Ludwig Thoma was the inn "Zur Überfahrt" directly on the lake, today the "Seehotel Überfahrt". Folk musician Kiem-Pauli played with his trio in the inn, and here later the legendary Tegernsee Farmers' Theater played the plays of Thomas .

The artists were followed by other, mostly well-heeled celebrities, and the luxury hotel business emerged (the most important name is the traditional Hotel Bachmair), on which the reputation of Rottach-Egern is based to this day. The first clinics in the region and also in Rottach-Egern were set up to take care of the no longer very young, but all the more wealthy guests.

Wallberg from the west

The Fifties That was the big and wild time: The Wallbergbahn was opened on April 20, 1951, and Rottach-Egern, which can be reached in a good half hour from Munich, became the international center of winter sports: from 1951 and 1959, the Rottach-Egern ski club hosted the race the "Goldenen Schild vom Wallberg", it was one of the most difficult of its time and from 1954 it was also the official downhill race of the Fédération Internationale de Ski (FIS). Toni Sailer still holds the track record of the descent with 2.22.7 minutes from 1954.

With the skiers came the celebrities from nearby Munich and from all over the world: shopping in the luxury boutiques on Seestrasse was popular during the day and partying in the cellar bars at night. The foreign visitors dressed in typical regional and traditional costumes, the invention of country house fashion is attributed to Rottach-Egern. Anyone who was self-conscious in Munich had their second home here (w: Otto Beisheim Founder of the Metro Group), BMW presented its Isetta to the public here.

With the luxury guests, the first beauty farm in Europe was established in Rottach-Egern (w: Gertraud Gruber), other clinics followed and later and still today attracted patients from all over the world: themselves w: Bob Marley was here for cancer treatment and spent the last days of his life here.

Rottach-Egern has held the title of climatic health resort since 1976.

When more and more large ski areas began to emerge in neighboring Tyrol from the 1970s and less and less snow fell in the Tegernsee Valley, skiing on the Wallberg largely came to a standstill, nowadays visitors come more to tobogganing and snowshoeing in winter and are more looking for nature in summer - and leisure experience, just as it became a bit quieter in the whole place after the very illustrious guests were looking for completely different destinations.

The political community Rottach-Egern was created in 1951 from the amalgamation of the village of Rottach (community name) with the parish village of Egern and many other hamlets and remote farms around the Wallberg, which continue to live in the field names and street names today.
