The Schliersee Monastery on the Kirchbichl (Kirchbühel) was first mentioned in a document on January 21, 779, probably destroyed around 907 and rebuilt in Westenhofen below the Kirchbichl. In 1140 the Schliers monastery was converted into a canon monastery with lay brothers by the Lords of Waldeck and by the Bishop Otto von Freising.
The monastery in Schliersee is the origin of the Hofkollegialstift der Liebfrauenkirche (Cathedral) in Munich: In 1495 the choir monastery was merged with that of Ilmmünster and the two were formed into the court collegiate monastery at the Church of Our Lady in Munich. The canons moved here in 1493/95 Munich in the court pen.
Since 1808 the place has been independent as a political municipality and since 1919 also a market.
The most famous part of the municipality is the hamlet Spitzingsee at the lake of the same name.
The best-known son of the community is the ski racer Markus Wasmeier, who became Olympic champion in Super-G and giant slalom in Lillehammer (Norway) in 1994.
Districts are Schliersee (place) and, Abwinkl, Attenberg, Breitenbach, Fischhausen, Grünboden, Josefsthal, Kalkgraben, Krainsberg, Kreit, Müller in Mühle, Neuhaus, Oberleiten, Pürstling, Riss, Schwaig, Spitzingsee, Valepp, Westenhofen

For shipping on the lake, see the section on mobility.
After a few teething problems, the quality of the water is excellent thanks to a circular sewer system.
Skiing history
The Schliersee is the most important region in the History of skiing in Bavaria: The Munich bookseller August Finsterlin, then the protagonist in skiing, bought the Högerhof in Fischhausen in 1891 and relocated his publishing house and bookstore from Munich to the south side of the Schliersee. From then on he printed the "Schliersseer Nachrichten". The educated citizens of the city of Munich followed him and discovered the sport on the boards. The Finsterlin house was expanded to become the "Cafe am See" and then the "Hotel Finsterlin" and became the first meeting point for the ski fans of that time, guests were aristocrats and wealthy citizens. In 1895 August Finsterlin brought out the first specialist magazine under the name "Der Schneeschuh".
In 1902 there was the first ski course in Fischhausen / Neuhausen, in 1904 the first ski race, in 1906/1907 the first Bavarian ski championships were held. It was cross-country skiing on skis, the route led over 25 km from Fischhausen to Spitzingsee and back. In 1925 the first carnival will take place on the Firstalm dated at Spitzingsee.
An exhibition in Markus Wasmeier open-air museum is dedicated to the entire history of alpine skiing in the region and in Bavaria, you can also see a pair of the very first skis.

- St. Martin Located in Westenhofen at the north-western entrance to the village of Schliersee and below the so-called Kirchbichl (former monastery site), the church is originally the oldest in the Schliersee valley as the former collegiate church of the monastery. The current church was rebuilt in 1734, completed in 1737, but not consecrated until 1758. The late Gothic tower dates from 1529, the interior in the New Renaissance style was created in 1878. The late Gothic St. Mary's altar, the rococo pulpit and reliquary shrines and the figure of St. Martin from the 16th century in the altar.
- This is in the cemetery of the Church of St. Martin Tomb of the poacher Georg Jennerwein, Poaching legend and assassination victim: he was found dead with a gunshot wound in the back. The Folk song sings about him:
- "It was a Schütz in his best years
- it was swept away from this earth .... ".
- The poachers and all soul mates hold the "Wildschütz Jennerwein" in high esteem even today, he is the namesake for shooting clubs and restaurants, on special days he receives a poached chamois placed on his grave.
- Jennewein's actual grave is not clearly documented: the Westhofen cemetery was expanded in 1890 and 1900. Since influential members of the community council did not want their relatives to be buried next to Jennerwein, the grave cross was moved to another place, and Jennerwein's grave was overgrown during World War II.
- St. George, Gothic chapel from the 14th century on the vineyard in the center of the village, the high altar dates from 1624. The vineyard is also an excellent vantage point over the town and the lake.
- St. Leonhard in an idyllic location in the Fischhausen district on the south bank of the lake, built between 1646 and 1688 with early baroque furnishings.
