glacier

Five glaciers are counted in the Bavarian Alps. All of them are badly affected by glacier melt, the loss is up to one meter thick per year. Of the formerly more than four square kilometers (400 ha) total area in 1820, less than approx. 0.7 km² are currently remaining (as of 2013).

With all statistics, the uncertainty of science must be taken into account: While according to various research results that polar pack ice generally increases, the European glaciers melt away, but not every year either. Example for 2013 an increase is recorded.

cards

  • The Alpine club cards "Bavarian Alps" with the respective designation "BY xx" (General plan) treat the Bavarian Alps in the map section according to the mountain regions and on the basis of the map series of the topographic map 1: 25,000 of the Bavarian State Office for Surveying. The AV maps are available as an edition with path markings and as an edition with ski routes (blue grid band).

The cards of the Bavarian land surveying administration:

  • The TK25 (Topographic map 1: 25,000 frame sheets) show the whole of Bavaria in a regular geometric grid of rows and columns with no particular overlap of the map section on a scale of 1: 25,000, price = € 6.90 / sheet.
  • The ATK25 (Official topographic map 1:25 000) is the new generation of maps since May 2010, it shows hiking trails (red) and cycle paths (green), the UTM kilometer grid and also contains tourist information and information on leisure activities. The maps cover the whole of Bavaria in a regular geometric grid of rows and columns, without taking any given touristic regions or administrative boundary conditions into account. However, the individual map sections overlap in the edge zones, which is why the area per sheet is 3.5 times larger than that of the TK25 series. Price = € 8.90 / sheet.
  • The UK50 (Topographic maps 1: 50,000) show (almost) all of Bavaria in a map section according to touristic regions with hiking and biking trails and with UTM grid for GPS users. Price = € 6.60 / single sheet and € 8.60 / double sheet.
  • BayernViewer: Topographic maps and aerial photographs of the Bavarian Surveying Administration with the possibility of distance measurement www.geodaten.bayern.de.

Other map series:

  • The Map publisherscompass and freytag & berndt (both from Austria) offer a large selection of maps for hikers, cyclists and other recreational athletes with details of routes and extensive tourist information. The maps are normally on a scale of 1: 50,000 and are therefore still sufficient in accuracy for hiking in the mountains. The map sections are oriented towards the tourist regions. In the past, the older Kompass maps were occasionally considered to be somewhat "imaginative" when it came to the details, but both maps in the current editions are to be classified as equivalent in terms of accuracy.
