Map of Koenigssee
  • Schoenau upon Kings sea, the only place directly on the lake (the center is a good kilometer from the lake shore) winter sports community and climatic health resort.

background

Königssee, southern part, the pyramid of the Schönfeldspitze in the center of the picture Stony sea;

The Königssee has an area of approx. 525 hectares (approx. 5.25 km²), a length of 8 km in north-south direction, a maximum width of approx. 1.3 km (east-west) and a shore length of approx. 20 km. The greatest depth is 190 m, making it the deepest lake in Bavaria.

His Emergence The lake owes the glacier from the Steinernes Meer, which in the last Ice Age gouged the U-shaped valley between Watzmann and Hagengebirge 200 meters deep and whose terminal moraine made of gravel and rubble near today's town of Schönau after the glacier retreat as a dam sealed off the valley and the fjord-like Königssee accumulated.

From the southeast the lake is fed by water from the Obersee, and to the north it is drained by the Königsseer Ache, Berchtesgadener Ache and Königsseeache towards the Salzach.

View from Jenner to Königssee

The surrounding high mountain landscape the Berchtesgaden Alps is on the west side of the lake Watzmann with its notorious east wall at St. Bartolomä, on the south side das Stone sea with the characteristic pyramid of the Schönfeldspitze in the middle of the lake. The Hagengebirge adjoins the south-east side, while the Jenner towers as part of the Göllstock on the north-east side above the boat docks near Schönau. To the north is from the boat dock at Schönau the southern crash of the Untersbergs visible behind Berchtesgaden.

The largely natural forest above the lake is mixed mountain forest and consists mainly of sycamore maple, beech, spruce, fir and larch.

As early as 1910, the area around the Königssee and the Königssee itself was given special protection as the “Berchtesgaden Alps protected plant district”.

Today the Königssee is completely in the "care zone" of the 1978 founded Berchtesgaden National Park, therefore the traditional uses of fishing and alpine farming (in contrast to the core zone) are still allowed here. A pipeline laid in the lake in 1989 connects St. Bartholomä and Saletalm to the sewer system in Schönau and ensures the lake's drinking water quality. The green color of the Königssees comes from limestone particles dissolved in the water. Motor boats with petrol drive are only allowed to the alpine farmers, the employees of the Berchtesgaden National Park and the professional fisherman, the tourist boats are electric.

In addition to the use Due to the tourist shipping with around 600,000 passengers a year, the Königssee is still important in fishing today (trout and char, perch and pike, a professional fisherman, see Web links). The fish harvest is between three and five tons per year.

Main attraction in autumn it is Almabtrieb across the Königssee, where the cows are brought across by boats if necessary.

Because of the great depth of the lake there is one Ice formation in winter very seldom takes place in prolonged cold, a stable ice cover only forms every seven years, most recently in 2006. The winter hike across the lake to St. Bartholomä is then all the more a main attraction with a correspondingly large participation.

Maritime shipping

Electric boat for 92 passengers

The extraordinary beauty of the walls up to 1800 m high (Watzmann) framed emerald green mountain lake is best discovered in a boat trip. The "Bayerische Seenschifffahrt" operates 17 large, almost noiseless electric boats. A world-famous attraction about halfway to St. Bartholomä is the multiple echoes of the steep mountain walls, blown by the boat driver with a trumpet, once or twice, depending on the weather. "Shooting", which was customary in the past, resulted in the echo often mentioned up to seven times, but is no longer permitted in the nature park today.

Stops next to the starting point 2 Königssee landing stage are the 3 Pier Kessel (request stop), the 4 St. Bartholomä landing stage and the 5 Pier Saletalpe with a possible walk to the Obersee (approx. 1/4 hour).

Jetty to the Saletalpe

As a rule, operation in the heated ships also takes place in winter and is only stopped when there is too much ice formation. From autumn and winter (end of October to end of April) the southern part of the lake is no longer approached, the end of the line is then St. Bartholomä.

Tourist Attractions

  • 1 Painter's angle : the preferred destination for landscape painters at Königssee since the 19th century.
On a hill on the east side near the north bank, in approx. 20 minutes from the large car park.
  • 2 Christliger Island at the entrance to the boat harbor. With the statue of St. Nepomuk, erected after a boat accident in 1712.
  • 3 Königsbachfall: approx. 200 m high water cascade over approx. 7 steps on the east side of the lake near Schönau, best seen from the boats; Access from the large car park over the Malerwinkel and further over a steep path.
  • 4 Falkensteiner Wall, Steep face on the west bank of the lake. With the memorial on the occasion of a pilgrimage boat that crashed in 1688 in which more than 70 pilgrims were killed. Best seen from the boats, not accessible on foot.

St. Bartholomew

The comparatively flat and 1.7 km² large peninsula is an estuary delta, created since the end of the last Ice Age from the rubble and debris of the Eisbach, the Königssee is narrowed here to only around 300 meters wide.

5 St. Bartholomä, in a romantic location on a peninsula of the lake, is a former royal hunting lodge of the prince provost of Berchtesgaden. The consecration of a first church ("Basilica Chunigesee") took place in 1134. The current pilgrimage church with the characteristic red roof shingles was built from 1697 and is the end of the Almer pilgrimage (see section Events).

In the 18th century, the castle was rebuilt as a summer residence and for hunting trips for the prince provost in Berchtesgaden. In 1810 the area with Berchtesgaden became Bavarian and as a result the favorite stay of the Bavarian kings.

Today the settlement consists essentially only of the inn and the former hunting lodge (in the current two-story form, probably from the 15th century), the fisherman's house, the ship's hut, the former yard, the hunter's house and the church and some former forest workers' huts.

  • St. Bartholomä nature park information point, Branch office of the National Park Administration in a historic forest workers' hut, open during the summer months (mid-May to mid-October).
  • 6 St. Johann and St. Paul is a second chapel on the peninsula, to be reached from St. Bartholomä in about 10 minutes via a forest path along the Eisbach. The forest chapel was built between 1617 and 1620 (in the middle of the Baroque period) in Gothic style, the baroque altar made of red marble is worth seeing.
  • The 7 Ice Chapel is at St. Bartholomä below the Watzmannostwand.
In the winter months, the snow collects in an "avalanche basin" at a height of approx. Due to the large amounts of snow and the shady location, the white splendor usually never thaws completely, even in summer. The name "Eiskapelle" comes from the meltwater hole in the stream that leaves the firn field. Entering this "ice cave" is life threateningas the cave can collapse at any time without warning.
The Watzmann east wall with the ice chapel is part of the project started in 2002 "Bavaria's most beautiful geotopes"(Bavarian State Office for the Environment) listed.
The snow field can be found after about an hour's walk above St. Bartholomä.
Info: www.eiskapelle.de;

Obersee

The Obersee can only be reached by non-mountain hikers by boat across the Königssee. The water level is 613 m above sea level and thus 10 m above that of the Königsee. The surface of the Obersee is approx. 57 hectares (that is about a tenth of the Königssees) with approx. 1.3 km length and approx. 400 meters width. The Obersee has a circumference of 3.5 km and is a maximum of 51 meters deep.

His Emergence The Obersee also owes the glacier of the Steinernes Meer, which 10,000 years ago left a terminal moraine at the Salet during one of its last advances and thus dammed the Obersee. The large boulders on the way from Königssee to Obersee come from a rock fall that was dated to 1172.

  • 8 Röthbach waterfall, the highest waterfall in Germany with a drop of 400 m, plunges into the "Fischunkel" basin at the rear (southeast) end of the Obersee.
Ascent from the Saletalm boat landing stage (615 m) via Obersee (715 m, the way to here wheelchair accessible, approx. 20 min), past the Fischunkelalm and to the valley floor at the end of the valley with the Röthbach waterfall (715 m) in approx. One or two Hours (approx. 4 km, path no. 424);

Schwarzreiter

A regional fish specialty from the Königssee is the Schwarzreiter:

It is a slightly smaller variant of the game fish char, which is caught as seasonal fish only in October and November in the great depths of the lake (deep-sea char).

Another special feature is the special spice-free preparation through the type of smoking over selected musty beech wood, which is responsible for the special taste.

The name of the delicacy is derived from the sticking on thin wooden skewers and the skin color of the fish after smoking.

The fish is only available in autumn and only by order from the fisherman from Königssee see web links;
