Pilgrimage Church of Maria Gern

In the 16th century the main goals of the Marian pilgrimage in Berchtesgadener Land were the images of the Virgin Mary in (Greater) Gmain, in Dürrnberg and the corn dress Madonna of the Augustinians in Berchtesgaden (in today's Franciscan Church). A first miraculous image in Maria Gern was a carved Madonna (today private property) in a wayside shrine on the place of today's Angererkapelle. This figure was the destination of a first pilgrimage in the 17th century. Evidence for a first chapel in is a votive tablet from 1626, other subsequent church buildings are documented by votive tablets from the pilgrimage.

Today's pilgrimage church was built between 1708 and 1710 under the pressure of increasing pilgrimages from the Berchtesgadener Land and also from neighboring Austria. The architect is unknown, the execution was carried out by Berchtesgaden artists and master craftsmen, namely the master bricklayer Jakob Hilliprandt and the court carpenter Gabriel Wenig. The altar comes from Kaspar Schneider. The church tower was not completed until 1724, the year it was inaugurated.

Inside the church, the high altar, the stucco and the frescoes and the numerous votive tablets behind the altar are particularly worth seeing, the oldest date from 1618 and 1628. The miraculous image venerated today is a Madonna carved by Wolf Hueber from Tyrol from 1666 .
