background

The Lattengebirge is framed by the valleys of the Saalach in the north, the Bischofswiesener Ache in the east, the Schwarzbach in the west and the Ramsauer Ache in the south.

The main ridge runs from north to south and has a length of approx. 10 kilometers in the base, in the west-east direction (Rotofenkamm) it is around 7 kilometers, the Lattengebirge is thus under the Berchtesgaden Alps in terms of area and height small mountain range. The area of the Lattengebirge is distributed over the aforementioned Valley locations and in unincorporated territory.

Geologically The Lattengebirge is Ramsaudolomit, the striking rock formations on the Rotofenkamm are small pieces of weathering. The limestone was formed as a deposit in the primordial sea Tethys around 250 million years ago.

Car head

The 1 Car head is at 1,738 m the central and also the highest peak of the Lattengebirge.

Sermon chair

The 2 Preaching chair shows up to the north as a rather gentle mountain, its rocky side is the south side. With the Predigtstuhlbahn out Bad Reichenhall, Put into service in 1928 and the oldest large cable car in the world, the summit is also easily accessible for non-hikers and is therefore the most visited summit in the Lattengebirge.

The Sleeping witch is the landmark of the Lattengebirge: in the distant view from the east, the rock formation of the Rotofenkamm (eastern part of the Lattengebirge) shows itself as a witch sleeping upside down. The witch's chest is the signal head, the rock of the Small Rotofenturm is the chin, the Large Rotofenturm is the nose (also "Montgelas nose"), named after Maximilian of Montgelas, known at the time for its oversized olfactory organ.

The 1 "Stone Agnes, located south of the Rotofenkamm, is often considered to be one of the most beautiful naturally created rock sculptures in the Eastern Alps. For the ascent, you need to be able to safely master the fifth level of difficulty in climbing. The rock is a small, weathered form of Ramsaudolomite.

According to a legend, it is about the god-fearing dairymaid Agnes, who found shelter in the rock while fleeing from the devil chasing her and froze to stone.

The stone Agnes is part of the project started in 2002 "Bavaria's most beautiful geotopes"(Bavarian State Office for the Environment) listed.

The "Alpgarten" is a wild, untouched and steep valley basin southeast of the Karkopf and below the Hochschlegel (1,688 m) known for its numerous chamois.

The "Devil's hole" (1585 m) is a natural rock gate about five meters long and is centrally located on a small elevation on the south-east running main ridge between the sleeping witch and the alpine garden. Depending on the season and the position of the sun, positions arise in the valley from which the passage of the sun in the hole in the mountain can be observed. Esotericists ascribe to these places, especially the one at the solstice in winter, a mythical meaning as places of power.

activities

General remarks on Mountain hiking and mountaineering and for behavior in the mountains see also here.

Because of the low-lying valley floors, mountain hikes in the Lattengebirge result in strenuous ascent heights on the mountain ridges of at least 1200 mH. On the ridges themselves, the height differences in the up and down are no longer so serious, so popular tours are the crossings, where several peaks are traversed at the same time.

kitchen

In summer there are mountain pastures and refreshment stops, no regular accommodation:

  • 2  Anthauptenalm (1,330 m) (at Vogelspitz).
