The highest peaks are the Große Teufelshorn (2,362 m) and the Kahlersberg (2,350 m), they are located on the edges of the mountains. Since the peaks are lower in the interior, the Hagen Mountains are plateau mountains.

The Hagengebirge is bordered in the west by the [Königssee]], to the north it closes over the Torrener Joch and the cut of the Bluntau valley Goellstock at. In the east it is dated from the valley of the Salzach Tennengebirge separated, in the south the Blühnbachtal is the border to the Hochkönig. About the Teufelshörner is the Hagengebirge in the southwest with the Stony sea connected.

While the side to the Königssee is well developed with the Jennerbahn, the other regions in the Hagengebirge are considered to be rather quiet and lonely.

geology

Like its neighboring mountains, the Hagen Mountains are made of Dachstein limestone, deposits of marine organisms at the bottom of the ancient Tethys sea around 200 million years ago. The core of the mountains consists of Ramsaudolomite, which is also a limestone. Subsequently, the mountains were raised with the unfolding of the Alps.

The result of the weathering of the limestone in the Hagengebirge is the karstified high plateau and the steep flanks to the Königsse and Salzach valleys. Another consequence of the weathering of the limestone are the huge cave systems in the interior of the mountains, the tantalum cave, discovered in 1947, has been explored over a distance of 34 km and is the largest known cave in the Salzburg region.
