The Pongau is a region in the state Salzburg and identical in area to the political one St. Johann im Pongau district.

Regions

Neighboring regions are Pinzgau, Tennengau and Lungau as well as the state Carinthia. The Pongau is part of the Salzburg Limestone Alps and the Tennengebirge in the north and the Tauern in the south. In between lie the Salzburg Slate Alps, on the slopes of which numerous winter sports facilities have been established. The Salzachpongau is drained by the Salzach, she comes at Loin from the Pinzgau and initially flows through to the east St. Johann and Bischofshofen, then it swings north and reaches at Golling the Tennengau.
