background

The Lungau is a plateau just over 1000 square kilometers in size, surrounded by the Hohe Tauern in the west, the Niedere Tauern (Radstädter- and Schladminger Tauern) in the north and east and the Gurktal Alps (Nockberge) in the south.

Since the 2nd century BC The area of today's Lungau belonged to Norikum, a Celtic kingdom. 15 BC In BC it was occupied by the Romans and in 50 AD it became a Roman province. From the 8th to the early 14th century, the Lungau was under Bavarian rule. The rule of the Salzburg prince archbishops then lasted from 1328 to 1803. After the area had been under Bavarian administration again for a short time, Salzburg became part of Upper Austria in 1816. With the creation of a separate crown land of Salzburg in 1848, a state constitution was issued, which also brought about new regulations for the state administration and the introduction of municipal regulations. In 1880 the Lungau was described as the "poorest" region in the State of Salzburg. The reason for this was its geographical isolation. It was only with the construction of the Tauern Autobahn (1974-1976) that the Lungau economy strengthened.

The highlight are the dances of honor performed by one Samson Waltz to be accompanied.
  • Only in the communities of Muhr and Zederhaus is there the custom of prangstangentragesn, which goes back to a vow made by the population on the occasion of a locust plague that took place more than 300 years ago. In Muhr the procession takes place on June 29th (solemnity of the apostles Peter and Paul) and in Zederhaus on June 24th (solemnity of the birth of John the Baptist). The 6 to 8 meters long and up to 80 kilos heavy wooden poles are wrapped with flower wreaths and garlands according to old patterns. The poles remain in the church until August 15th ("High Women's Day"). Then they will be blessed and taken home to be dried until Christmas. On the three days of Christmas, these herbs are used to smoke house and yard.
