Sankt Margarethen is a well-known holiday resort at the foot of the Aineck in the Lungau region. Since the construction of the Tauern Autobahn, the town has lived from tourism. In the south is the Katschberg with the Katschbergpass. Especially the north-south connection between the Tauern and the Katschberg makes the community very cheap. The place is characterized by winter and summer tourism, especially through the beautiful hiking area Aineck-Katschberg, well-developed cycle and mountain bike routes and a 27-hole golf course.

The place is only served by the bus. There are lines to Salzburg, Tamsweg, Muhr, Katschberg and Radstadt. All points are easily accessible by car. E-bikes were recently purchased for hire and the recharging network is well developed.

Sankt Margarethen is particularly suitable for skiing in winter. Four of the six Lungau ski areas Katschberg, Aineck, Speiereck, Großeck can be reached directly from the village and the other two Obertauern and Fanningberg can be reached by bus. Cross-country trails are available from 1100 to 1700 meters.

In summer the place is the starting point for bike tours as well as for demanding mountain bike routes in the mountains. Hikers in the region get their money's worth thanks to the valley buses, which mostly go to the ends of the valley.
