mobility

Katschberghöhe

The pass road B99 (Katschbergbundesstrasse) over the Katschberghöhe was until the opening of the Katschberg tunnel in 1974 the only navigable route across the Alps from Salzburg to Carinthia.

The next place is on the Salzburg side Saint Michael (approx. 1,075 m), on the Carinthian side St. Peter im Holz (approx. 1,200 m). The length of the pass road between the two places is around 12 kilometers, the pass is roughly in the middle of the route. The slope of the ramps on the north side and on the south side (Rennweg) is approx. 10% on average and up to 17% as maximum.

The Katschbergpass is toll-free.

For a complete overview of passes, see also the article on the Alpine passes.

Katschberg tunnel

The Katschberg tunnel is the connecting tunnel to the Tauern motorway A10 between Carinthia and Salzburg, it was first opened in 1974 with one tube and two lanes and a length of 5,413 m. In 2004, the construction of a second tube with a length of 5,898 m began, which was opened in 2008. After renovation (2009), the length of the old tube is 5,565 m, and since then four lanes have been available in two tubes.

The two tubes of the Katschberg tunnel correspond to the most modern technology and the current RVS (Austrian guidelines for traffic and road construction), they are equipped among other things with modern monitoring devices, 14 accessible cross passages, numerous emergency call niches and fire extinguishing niches.

The special toll for the Katschberg tunnel is (since July 2011) for motorcycles and cars up to 3.5 tons (category 1) 10 euros per trip, an annual ticket costs 95 euros.
