background

The area the Hohe Tauern extends from the valley of the Salzach in the north to Val Pusteria, Antholz Valley and to the valley of the Drava in the south. The Hohe Tauern range from the Krimmler Ache valley in the west to the Grossarl valley in the east.

Adjacent mountains are those in the west Zillertal Alps, in the north the Kitzbühel Alps, in the east the Lower Tauern and in the south the Lienz Dolomites.

The Name "Hohe Tauern" is not derived from the high peaks, but probably from the "high gates", the transitions.

In addition to many three-thousand-meter peaks, some of the highest mountains in Austria are located in the Grossglockner and Venediger mountains. The mountains are partly heavily glaciated, the Pasterze on the Großglockner is the largest glacier in Austria. The Tauern are also extreme rich in water, hydropower is used in many reservoirs. The dramatic construction of the Großglockner-Karprun reservoir between 1924 and 1956 with its 164 deaths became a myth, and the Tauern power plant (today: Austrian Hydro Power AG) is still one of the largest hydropower plants in Central Europe.
