background

The Raurisertal leads from the north from the Salzach Valley (780 m) in a southerly direction over a length of approx. 30 km into the Tauern main ridge Goldberg Group, the upper end of the valley Kolm Saigurn lies at an altitude of 1598 m. Kolm Saigurn lies at the foot of the 3,106m high Hohe Sonnblicks, on the summit of which Europe's highest weather station has stood for 127 years. The valley system is drained by the Rauriser Ache. It is initially quite narrow at its confluence with the Salzach (1 Kitzloch Gorge), but then widens and becomes wider.

Rauris is the name of the main town and also the name for the administrative merger of the towns in the valley, with an area of 253 km², Rauris is the 3rd largest municipality in Austria.

Gold mining in the Hüttwinkltal and in Head of the Kolm Saigurn valley The Rauris Valley gained importance early on. You can still discover old miners' houses and tunnels from the gold mining era there.

Since 1984, the Rauris Valley with its side valleys has been part of the Hohe Tauern National Park.

The Rauris Valley is somewhat in the tourist shadow of the neighboring one immediately to the east Gastein Valley with the mundane Bad Gastein and the Fuscher valley to the west (Heiligenblut and Grossglockner) with the better known Grossglockner High Alpine Road, is therefore even more original and not so crowded.

The region markets itself as the "golden valley of the alps", with reference to the historical gold and silver mining in the Goldberg group at the end of the valley above Kolm Saigurn. Mining is currently closed, the valley is now mainly dominated by agriculture and forestry. Visitors can visit 3 different gold panning sites in the Rauris Valley Try luck as a gold panner (original gold panning area Bodenhaus, Hochalm and Sportalm).
