background

The year of the first documentary mention is 1245, Traunstein still belongs to Salzburg, but already from 1275 to Bavaria.

In the Middle Ages, the city gained importance due to its location on the Salt trade route and was quite wealthy, but was largely spared from the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648).

The nationalization of the free salt trade in 1587 and the construction of a brine pipeline from Reichenhall to Traunstein and the construction of its own salt works for salt production in the years 1616 to 1619 mitigated the consequences.

Big ones are occupied City fires in the years 1704 (by Hungarian Pandours as a result of the Spanish War of Succession) and that of 1851 without a clear cause, an alleged city fire in 1400 is controversial in science.

The high status of Customs and culture is shown in the local mountain rifle company, the traditional costume association and the community brass band and other cultural associations.

With over 14,000 jobs, Traunstein is also an important commercial location in the region today.

The city is particularly proud as "Hometown" From Pope Benedict XVI .: Joseph Ratzinger spent his youth in Traunstein, went to school here and celebrated his first class in the parish church of St. Oswald.
