Ruhpolding is a major tourist destination in Chiemgau, in the Chiemgau Alps and also as a whole Bavarian Alps. In addition, the community has national and international importance in winter sports through the biathlon center and the annual biathlon world cup.
background
The Ruhpolding basin (Miesenbacher Tal) owes its formation to the glaciers of the last ice age.
The colonization by Bavaria is dated to the 9th and 10th centuries, the Ruhpoldingen estate is first mentioned in a document around 1193. The naming is interpreted as the name for the people at "Ruhpold".
The area around Ruhpolding initially belonged to Salzburg and in the middle of the 13th century came with the whole of Chiemgau to Bavaria. In the 17th to 19th centuries the forestry and the sale of wood to Traunstein (for use in the local saltworks) is the main source of income in the region.
The political Ruhpolding municipality was created on January 1, 1882 from the previously independent municipalities of Ruhpolding, Zell and Vachenau and today consists of a total of 55 villages, hamlets and remote farms. With a total area of 148 km² (80 percent of which is forest), Ruhpolding is the fourth largest municipality in terms of area Bavaria.
The tourism is the most important economic pillar for the place, in 2009 the municipality of Ruhpolding listed 613 accommodation establishments with a total of approx. 5000 beds.
biathlon
The word biathlon comes from the Greek for duel and stands for the two disciplines shooting and running. The sport has its beginnings in Norway and in Nordic mythology, in Scandinavia hunters have been on boards, the predecessors of today's skis, in winter since ancient times. Ski regiments have existed in Norway since the 16th century.
The local hunter Eduard Hauenstein was the first Ruhpolding ski pioneer as the first Ruhpolding ski pioneer: in 1897 he brought the first cross-country skiing boards back to the village from a trip from Lapland. Biathlon has been cultivated by the military as a "patrol run" since the beginning of the twentieth century and was considered a war sport at the time. After the end of the Second World War, biathlon initially lost its popularity.
Since 1964 there has been a biathlon performance center in Ruhpolding as the central training center in what was then West Germany. There have been (West) German championships since 1970. The use of small-caliber weapons from 1972 onwards opened up the sport to non-military personnel and biathlon became a popular sport. 1972 was also the year of the first German title fights in Ruhpolding.
In April 1972, Ruhpolding received the approval for the newly planned biathlon state performance center in Upper Bavaria, it was built from 1977, 1979 as Stadium on the Zirmberg put into operation and since then expanded and modernized several times, the last time for the current World Cup in 2012. Today the stadium is the Chiemgau Arena.
1976 was the year of the first World Cup. In (West) Germany, sports support teams were set up in the Bundeswehr. Ruhpolding has also been there since 1985 Federal Performance Center for biathlon and also a performance center for Nordic skiing in general.
Since the first competitions in 1972, Ruhpolding has been a sports facility for numerous national and international competitions and with up to 22,000 spectators in the stadium and on the course of the competitions.
