Thunder holes near Kienberg

Since time immemorial, sinkholes, so-called thunder holes, have occurred in the area around Kienberg. New earth collapses occur especially after strong thunderstorms. The leaching of fine sediments in the subsoil creates cavities whose loamy cover suddenly gives way. The list kept by the home nurse has comprised a total of 114 cases since 1910. Thanks to the work of the Technical University of Munich, the list could be expanded to 194 cases.[1]

The Donnerloch with its considerable depth of at least six meters, which was discovered by a mushroom picker on October 25, 2013 in a forest between Kienberg and Viehhausen, attracted particular attention.[2]
