The climatic health resort Aschau im Chiemgau lies on the northern edge of the Chiemgau Alps in the valley of the Prien in Upper Bavaria at the foot of the Kampenwand rock massif. The traditional place hosted vacationers over 100 years ago.

The first settlement finds in the region date from the Celtic era, around 600 AD the Bavarians immigrated. The place Aschau is mentioned in a Salzburg document book for the first time as "ad ascouva" in the year 927, later the names Ascoue or Eschenau appear. The first scientifically proven mention is the year 1120. One interpretation of the name is the origin of the ash trees , a common native tree species.

Aschau today consists of the main town and a total of 43 districts.

In addition to around 50 farms, the tourism an important line of business in the village: the municipality has 2,900 guest beds with around 320,000 overnight stays per year.

By plane

1 Aschau is the terminus of the Chiemgaubahn, the regional train begins in Prien. The station Prien is a stop for IC and is on the Munich-Salzburg railway line.

In the street

Aschau is located on the Bavarian state road St 2093, the route leads through the village.

The Autobahn Autobahn A8 (Munich - Salzburg) is the most important traffic connection in Chiemgau: departure to Aschau in Frasdorf (coming from the west / Munich area) or in Bernau am Chiemsee (coming from the east). From both runs it is about 5 km to Aschau.

By bicycle

The Lake Constance-Koenigssee cycle path leads through Aschau.

On foot

Hikers on the European long-distance footpath E4 come through Aschau and climb here - either on foot or with the gondola lift - the ascent to Kampenwand.

Hohenaschau Castle, located high above the Priental and the town of Aschau, is one of the mightiest castles on the edge of the Alps. The castle was built in 1165 and 1170 by the two brothers Alhardt and Conrad von Hirnsberg, parts of the defense tower, foundation walls of the castle and parts of the surrounding wall are still preserved from this time. In the years 1540-1560 renovations and extensions in the style of the Renaissance, in a further construction phase from 1672-1686 addition of the baroque castle chapel and the benefit house, which today houses the Priental Museum. After various changes of ownership in the course of its history, the castle is now owned by the Federal Republic of Germany, which uses it as a holiday home for the federal tax authorities. Concerts and theater performances in summer take place in the complex.

The three-pointed rock backdrop of the 1,669 m high Kampenwand is easily accessible with the 4-seater gondola and a 1½-hour walk. The train leads to 6 Kampenwandbahn mountain station Mountain station at 1467 m. The fare is € 20, just € 14 (As of summer 2015). The summit panorama extends over Chiemsee and foothills in the north to the central Alps (Hohe Tauern) in the south.

On the Steinlingalm

Of the2 Mountain station of the Kampenwandbahn Several hiking trails start at 1,467 m:

  • Panoramaweg to 7 Steinlingalm (1467 m, cultivated with beer garden), comfortable wide path, approx. 30 min. At the Steinling plateau there is one 8 Steinling plateau memorial chapel for the fallen of the two world wars from the Chiemgau.

From the Steinlingalm:

  • Sturdy shoes are required for further hikes.
  • Descent and ascent to 9 Sulten (1467 m). From there you have a fantastic view of the Chiemsee and the Kampenwand.
  • Ascent from the Steinling plateau to the 10 Kampenwand east summit (1,664 m), there and back approx. 60 min., Surefootedness required.
  • From the Steinlingalm down to the valley station, approx. 1.5 hours.
