The Achensee located in Tyrol. The fjord-like mountain lake at an altitude of 926 m is a popular travel destination, especially in the summer months. In winter and spring there is very little water in the lake as the water is after Jenbach is taken to generate electricity. Incidentally, the lake is almost of drinking water quality.

Lake data of the Achensee:
- Water surface: 6.8 square kilometers (largest body of water in Tyrol)
- Length: 9.4 km
- Width: up to a kilometer
- Depth: 133 m
- Water quality: The lake has almost drinking water quality.
- Water temperature: up to 19 degrees (mean water level: approx. 929 m)
- Storage volume: 66 million cubic meters. Since 1927, the Achensee has been drained via the Inn and thus used as a "natural dam". The reservoir volume of the lake was increased by a small dam. The hydropower plant is located near Jenbach in the Inn Valley and is operated by the Tiroler Wasserkraft AG operated. It has a height of fall of 380 m. Due to the storage volume, the water level of the lake fluctuates by up to 12 m. In the winter half-year the water level is very low. Because of the tourism, the Achensee is not emptied that far in the summer half of the year.

Achenseebahn
Friends of historic railways will find a special gem on the Tyrolean Achensee. Since 1889, a steam cogwheel railway has connected Jenbach in the Inn Valley (530 m) with the Achensee (931 m) 400 m higher. The Achenseebahn is a narrow-gauge rack railway (gauge 1000 mm). Over a distance of 7 km, the train overcomes an altitude difference of approx. 400 m with the help of a gear drive (maximum gradient of up to 16%). At the final stop Seespitz you can change directly to the ship. Incidentally, the Achenseebahn is the oldest exclusively steam-powered rack railway in Europe.
- Prices: One-way trip Jenbach - Seespitz: 23.- €; Ascent and descent 29.50 € (as of 03-2017); Info Achenseebahn;
- The station Jenbach is a station on the Westbahn, the railway line from Vienna via Salzburg and Innsbruck to Bregenz. Jenbach train station is also the starting point for the Zillertal Railway Mayrhofen in the Zillertal; Info Zillertalbahn
Tourist Attractions
In the sea area
- Achenseebahn. The 7 km long Achsseebahn connects Jenbach im Inntal with the lake, which is approx. 400 m higher. The difference in height is overcome by means of a rack. At the lake you can change directly to the ship. The journey is a special experience for fans of historical rail technology, as most of the operation is still carried out by steam trains.
- Rofan - The over 2200 m high mountain limits the Achensee to the east. From Maurach you can take the Rofan cable car Drive directly into the high alpine area to the Erfurter Hütte at 1831 m.
- Falzthurntal - Worth seeing Karwendeltal, which is accessible from Pertisau via a toll road or hiking trails. The 7 km long toll road, which is free for cyclists, is also a nice cycling route. Up to the Gramaialm at 1263 m you have to conquer approx. 300 m from the Achensee. The end of the valley is also the end for mountain bikers - unless you accept longer carrying distances.
In the wider environment
- black in the Inn Valley. These are among the most famous sights of the Karwendel Silver Region Tratzberg Castle and also what is known about the borders of Austria Schwaz silver mine
activities
Bathing in the lake
- Due to the high position of the lake, the water is a maximum of approx. 18-19 degrees Celsius warm (mean water level: approx. 929 m). But it is always healthy because the water is almost of drinking water quality. It's also worth doing kneipp therapy when the lake is a little cooler. However, some swimmers do not want to do without their wetsuit.
water sports
Information for water sports enthusiasts of the fishing & lake administration Achensee.
Windsurfing and Kite surfing in Buchau (Maurach) or along the long "Seeuferstraße" (towards Achenkirch).
Permission to surf at the Achensee costs € 16 for one month and € 40 (2019) for the season.
Problem: The north wind blows very irregularly, resulting in long waiting times that have to be bridged by "chilling out".
Also for Paddle the Achensee is a suitable area. Detailed information on this in Folding boat wiki.
hike
Achensee west bank path
The hiking trail (closed for bicycles and not suitable for strollers) leads from Pertisau until after Achenkirch. The lakeshore is particularly rugged here, as the Karwendel mountains drop steeply down to the lake. If you love wild, largely untouched nature in the mountains, this is the right place for you. Of course you are not alone on the popular trail, but the number of hikers is limited. This has something to do with the not very easy nature of the path.
For the use of the mountain path to the Gaisalm (Mary's dough) you should bring a head for heights and sturdy shoes. "Flip-flops and high heels" are completely wrong footwear for the route. Ankle-high, sturdy mountain hiking boots are best. As a minimum, we recommend shoes with a good treaded sole and reasonably good grip (e.g. running or nordic walking shoes). On the way, you can stop off at the Gaisalm, which is only accessible on foot and by boat (for a description of the Gaisalm, see Achensee shipping). Location of the Gaisalm: 47 ° 28 '36 "N.11 ° 42 ′ 7 ″ E.
The second stage of the route from the Gaisalm to Achenkirch runs as Gaisalmsteig really high above the lake. The path is secured with wire ropes. Here you need a better head for heights and more surefootedness than on the first part of the path. But for this effort you will be rewarded with fantastic panoramic views over the lake.
Walking times:
- Pertisau (jetty) - Achenkirch ("Scholastika" jetty): approx. 2 1/2 - 3 hours (without a break on the Gaisalm)
- Pertisau (jetty) - Gaisalm (jetty): approx. 1 1/2 hours
- Gaisalm (ship pier) - Achenkirch (ship pier "Scholastika"): approx. 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 hours (mountainous route)
- The return trip with the Achensseeschifffahrt is recommended. If you want, you can of course walk around the whole lake (about 24 km). However, the remaining sections of the route on foot are not so recommendable.
Mountain hiking
- Zwölferhorn 1491 m at Pertisau: This mountain right on the lake is ideal for smaller mountain hikes. The Karwendel mountain railway facilitates the ascent.
- Gerntal near Pertisau. The valley opens up some beautiful walking and mountain hiking opportunities.
- Rofan - With the use of the Rofan cable car of Maurach this results in easy hikes in the high alpine area.
To go biking
Achensee cycle path
Course: Pertisau - Maurach - Achenkirch (approx. 15 km one way)
- largely flat stretch that is paved (along the eastern shore of the lake). Attention: Half of the route between Buchau and Achenkirch (the 4 km long section Buchau - Camping Schwarzenau) is one Toll road. Here you have to cycle with the motor vehicle traffic.
- There is only one hiking trail on the western shore of the lake (section Pertisau - Achenkirch).
