Erding is a busy district town northeast of Munich in Upper Bavaria. It is home to the largest wheat beer brewery in the world, the largest sauna area in Europe and many other world-famous companies. Nonetheless, it has retained its historical core, where you can now shop comfortably and eat well in the evening.

background

The oldest evidence of human settlement in the Erdinger area dates back to 6000 BC, when hunters and gatherers still lived here. Around the year 2500 BC. agriculture was practiced for the first time and is still one of the most important economic sectors in the region today. Erding's story officially began in 742, when today's Altham district was first mentioned in a document. At that time, a member of the family gave the Agilolfinger Altham dem Benediktbeuern Monastery. The settlement Ardeoin gas (this later became Erding) is then mentioned for the first time in 788. A significant year in Erdinger's history is 1228, because the then Duke of Bavaria, Ludwig the Kelheimer, granted the settlement the city charter.

City coat of arms Erdings

The Erdinger city coat of arms of a lying ploughshare, which is still in use today, dates from around this time. This symbol of earthworking was intended as a proverbial symbol Erdings. In order to secure the status of their young city and to make it widely recognizable, the Erdinger became in the 14th century City tower built. In contrast to today, Erding was still part of Lower Bavaria.

Erding in 1644.

The Thirty Years' War (1618-48) did not spare Erding either. Twice, in 1632 and 1634, the city was conquered by the Swedes, plundered and then set on fire. The population was starving and diseases like the plague spread. After a few years of relative calm, Erding became a theater of war again as the Swedish general Carl Gustav Wrangel his headquarters here and the population fled to surrounding areas. As the general's enemy troops Piccolomini returned to the city, the Swedes set fire again and withdrew. But this time, too, the hard-working people in the earth succeeded in rebuilding their city, an act that was financed by the introduction of the "beer tax". Over time, the city grew again and according to the 1789 census, 1700 people lived in Erding. This census also mentions the presence of four blacksmiths and saddlers, eight tailors and cobblers, two hat makers, eleven inns, bakers and butchers, as well as eleven musicians.

But even in the next few centuries Erding was not spared the suffering of the war. At the time of the Napoleonic Wars, soldiers were quartered here and Erding was still bombed in the last days of the Second World War. After the air raid in April 1945, the city fell to US troops in May without a fight.

The city of Erding, as it is administratively today, was created through the merger of the previously independent municipalities of Erding, Altenerding and Langengeisling in 1978. In the decades that followed, Erding grew steadily, not least after the opening of the Munich Airport Franz Josef Strauss in the Erdinger Moos. The district of Erding has around 50% of the area of the airport and surrounding communities such as Schwaig profit economically from the relocation of different companies. There is a logistics center for the express service in Erding itself GLS, as well as the company's data center Amadeus, the world's leading flight reservation and booking system. But in addition to the large commercial airport, there is another one in Erding Air base, which was acquired by the Luftwaffe in 1957 and is now used for the maintenance of Tornado fighters. Sometimes they fly low-level laps over the city for test purposes. Drinks from Erding are also popular around the world. So is next to the Erdinger wheat beer brewery also the headquarters of the group of companies Anton Riemerschmid (Bar and fruit syrups, Pitú, Münchner Kindl etc.) in place.

security

Bavaria in general and Erding in particular are very "safe" and have a low crime rate. The potential for violence is also low here. In Erding you can easily walk through the city at any time, even during the night. Because of the restaurants and bars, the city center is still lively even after the shops close.

health

There is no shortage of pharmacies in Erding. In the center, for example, there is one on the Kleiner Platz, one between the beautiful tower and the town hall and the Marienapotheke can be found on Haager Strasse.

Not far from the thermal baths, in the southwest of the city, is the modern District Hospital Erding. It was built in 1970, renovated in 2006 and today offers very nice hospital rooms for longer stays, but also a good infrastructure in the emergency room or for outpatient treatment. The hospital is located on Bajuwarenstr. 5, Tel. 49 8122 / 59-0, Fax 49 8122 / 59-1748. Practical advice

The tourist information is located right next to the beautiful tower on Landshuter Straße. It is open on Fridays from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. If it is closed, you can go to the information point in the town hall (pink building opposite, right in the entrance area) and ask for a variety of information or take brochures with you. The official website of the city for tourists and visitors is www.erding-tourist.de.

In the innermost center Unfortunately, there is no post office at the moment, only a few mailboxes at the Sparkasse on Schrannenplatz (there are also telephone booths here). The post office closest to the center is on Dorfener Straße 17. From the center you go through the Schöne Tor towards the S-Bahn station and you will see the Postbank branch with a postage stamp machine on the right-hand side. If you continue on Dorfener Straße for about 5 minutes and leave the S-Bahn station on the right, you will see a shopping center with a cinema on the left. This is where the Erdinger main post office is located.
