Landshut is the seat of the government of Lower Bavaria and has about 70,000 inhabitants.

background

Even before the city was founded, there was a fortified and wax settlement on the area of today's Trausnitz Castle, which was named around the year 1150 Landeshuata (Landeshut for "hat and protection of the country") is mentioned in a document, but after excavations in 2002 it has probably existed since the 10th century. The flourishing of trade in Bavaria fell under the reign of the second Bavarian duke from the Wittelsbach family: power disputes flared up between Duke Ludwig dem Kelheimer, son of Otto I, who was enfeoffed with the Duchy of Bavaria by Friedrich Barbarossa, and the Bishop of Regensburg . As a result, the duke had the episcopal "Strasbourg" north-east of today's Landshut destroyed. It is believed that the castle was built to guard an important bridge. Shortly afterwards, in 1204, the duke decided to found a city a few kilometers up the Isar and to bridge the river. The settlement, which has since been referred to as Landshut, was the first major city to be founded by Ludwig des Kelheimer in Lower Bavaria.

Map of Landshut

City bus

The Stadtwerke Landshut offers a very good bus network with 14 different lines (the city lines). The buses usually run every 30 minutes and stop very frequently. The main hubs for bus traffic are the main train station and the old town. Both are frequently served by almost all alternating lines. Taking bicycles with you is generally excluded.

A slightly slimmed-down night schedule with ten lines (the evening lines) also allows many destinations to be reached at a later hour. There are special timetables during the Dult (the regional folk festival) or the Landshut wedding. Occasionally, however, the passengers are lightly to heavily drunk at a later hour.

At rush hours, five additional lines (the express lines) with fewer stops and different routes run to alleviate the cramped space situation in the city buses.

RBO

For longer distances, the line of the regional bus company Verkehrsgesellschaft Ostbayern (RBO) is recommended. Most lines start from Landshut main station. During the Dult (the regional folk festival) or the Landshut wedding, there are often special trips from private providers. Occasionally, however, the passengers are slightly to heavily drunk at a later hour.

With the RBO buses from Landshut you can reach all municipalities in the rural district (within a 30 to 40 kilometer radius) as well as surrounding municipalities from the neighboring rural districts. The RBO timetables, however, are not regular timetables, the capacity utilization is too low for that. Usually only a few trips are offered each day.

St. Martins Church and Trausnitz Castle
The St. Martin's Tower

The 1 Landshut parish and collegiate church St. Martin and KastulusLandshuter Stadtpfarr- und Kollegiatstiftskirche St. Martin und Kastulus in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaLandshuter Stadtpfarr- und Kollegiatstiftskirche St. Martin und Kastulus im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsLandshuter Stadtpfarr- und Kollegiatstiftskirche St. Martin und Kastulus (Q560855) in der Datenbank Wikidata (Basilica minor) is the main church in Landshut and is centrally located (and visible from afar) in the middle of the old town. It was started as a hall church by master builder Hans Krumenauer around 1385 and completed around 1500 with the significant involvement of Hans von Burghausen. With its extraordinary architecture, verticalized over the dimensions, in which elements of high and late Gothic are combined, the Martinskirche is one of the most important Gothic monumental buildings in southern Germany. At 130.6 meters, the tower is the tallest brick tower in the world and the tallest church tower in Bavaria.

The Holy Spirit Church, north elevation

The 2 Hospital Church of the Holy SpiritSpitalkirche Heilig-Geist in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaSpitalkirche Heilig-Geist im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsSpitalkirche Heilig-Geist (Q1594876) in der Datenbank Wikidata is a subsidiary church of the parish of St. Martin. It is located almost directly on the banks of the Great Isar and forms the end of the old town to the north. Directly opposite the church is the Heilig-Geist-Spital, which - founded in 1208 - has a close historical connection with the Heilig-Geist-Kirche. This was built in the years 1407 to 1461 according to the plans of Hans von Burghausen in the Gothic style. After the master builder's death in 1432, Hans Stethaimer, after whom an important street in Landshut is named today, took over the construction work. The tower should originally have been even higher than the Martinsturm, but Stethaimer did not realize this for reasons of cost. In contrast to the architectural style, the interior was designed in baroque style (much later), but replaced by neo-Gothic elements at the end of the 19th century. After extensive renovations in 1961 and 1998, very little of these remains today. During these renovation measures, damage from the Second World War was also repaired. Today the Heilig-Geist-Kirche hosts exhibitions from time to time, as only a few services take place here.

The Gothic Church of St. Jodok in the Freyung district

The 3 Parish Church of St. JodokPfarrkirche St. Jodok in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaPfarrkirche St. Jodok im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsPfarrkirche St. Jodok (Q2319032) in der Datenbank Wikidata is the second oldest parish church in Landshut after the Martinskirche (founded 1369). It was commissioned by Duke Heinrich XIV for the Freyung district, which was newly founded in 1338. The Jodok Church was built in the Gothic style between the second half of the 14th century and the end of the 16th century. The building work was set back by decades by the fire of 1402, which led to a redesign of the architecture. The ceiling construction was redesigned and the two side chapels were built. In the middle of the 19th century, the interior was completely redesigned; the last renovation dates from the 1990s. At 77 meters, the tower of the Jodokskirche is the second highest tower in Landshut after the Martinskirche.

Also the 4 Parish Church of St. NikolaPfarrkirche St. Nikola in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaPfarrkirche St. Nikola im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsPfarrkirche St. Nikola (Q21664005) in der Datenbank Wikidata have a long history. As early as 1157, almost 50 years before Landshut was founded, St. Nikola was founded as a branch church in the neighboring town of Ergolding. In 1232 the Nikolakirche was attached to the already existing Cistercian convent Seligenthal. Towards the end of the Second World War, the church was badly destroyed and only poorly renovated. After the foundations erected on piles threatened to collapse due to the increasing regulation of water bodies, the structure would have to be extensively renovated in the 1990s. The church was greatly enlarged by a new building.

The church 5 Holy bloodHeilig Blut in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaHeilig Blut im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsHeilig Blut (Q21596802) in der Datenbank Wikidata is a beautiful Gothic church with two striking round towers in the Berg district and the oldest cemetery in Landshut.

Castles, chateaux and palaces

Trausnitz Castle, west view

The 6 Trausnitz CastleBurg Trausnitz in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaBurg Trausnitz im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsBurg Trausnitz (Q512271) in der Datenbank Wikidata is enthroned on the spur of a steep slope called the Hofberg at an altitude of over 500 m above sea level. NN directly above the old town of Landshut and the Isar and is next to the Martinskirche the most famous landmark of Landshut. Today's castle dates in its oldest parts from the year 1204, the year the city of Landshut was founded. It was completed in 1235 when Emperor Friedrich II was staying in Landshut. He made the castle a center of imperial politics and Hohenstaufen rule. Then it was almost continuously the ducal seat of the (Lower) Bavarian Wittelsbach family until 1503. The castle, now known as Trausnitz (= don't trust you), experienced a renewed cultural heyday in the late 16th century by Duke Wilhelm V. However, the wall paintings created at that time were largely destroyed by the castle fire in 1961. During the Thirty Years War on July 22nd, 1634 the city of Landshut and the castle were besieged by the Swedes. In the eastern part of the castle a large breach was made in the castle wall, through which the Swedes could gain access. Because of this incident, the gate at this point is still known today as the Swedish Gate.

The city residence seen from the old town

The 7 Landshut city residenceLandshuter Stadtresidenz in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaLandshuter Stadtresidenz im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsLandshuter Stadtresidenz (Q2327993) in der Datenbank Wikidata is the first Renaissance palace north of the Alps. It is located opposite the town hall in the middle of the old town. It was built from 1536 to 1543 under Duke Ludwig X. First of all, the German construction built. On a trip to Italy, the Duke then hired Italian builders who built the residence around the Italian construction widened towards the rear. The model for the Italian building was the villa-like, suburban Palazzo del Te in Mantua. The state rooms of the city residence with rich stucco work and frescoes are now a tourist attraction of the city. While the stucco work was done by Italians, the paintings on biblical, mythological and historical subjects were made by artists such as Hermanus Posthumus, Hans Bocksberger the Elder and Ludwig Refinger. The facade on the city side was redesigned in a classical style when Count Palatine Wilhelm von Birkenfeld-Gelnhausen resided here from 1780-1799. The Birkenfeld rooms also date from this time. When Crown Prince Ludwig lived here during his studies in Landshut in the first decade of the 19th century, some of the rooms were given early wall wallpapers that have become rare today. Today the city residence houses a museum with changing exhibitions and a café.

activities

Landshut wedding
The Landshut Wedding 1475, one of the largest historical festivals in Europe, is celebrated here every four years with the shout "Himmel Landshut, Tausend Landshut". The wedding of Landshut's son George the Rich with the Polish king's daughter Hedwig is remembered. This was precisely documented and is honored in this three-week festival, as it united the Christian West at that time.
You can see around 2,400 actors dressed in true to the original, medieval costumes, who bring the wedding of yore to life against the backdrop of the old capital of the then Duchy of Lower Bavaria. The event is attended by over 700,000 spectators each year of performance.
The last performance (every four years!) Of the LaHo (as it is called by the locals) was in June / July 2017.
  • Carnival parade
Every two years (always in odd years) the Landshut carnival parade takes place on Shrove Sunday in the city center. The approx. 1.2 kilometer long route leads from Innere Münchener Straße via Dreifaltigkeitsplatz, Altstadt, Postplatz and Heilig-Geist-Gasse to Bischof-Sailer-Platz. The move will then come to an end at various stands in the city center.
  • Landshut Zinkenfasching
The Landshut Zinkenfasching in the old town takes place every year on the afternoon of Shrove Tuesday. In the foolish hustle and bustle, the many red noses, after which this important event is named shortly before the sweep, are particularly noticeable.
  • Landshut short film festival
Every year in March, the Landshut Short Film Festival takes place, which was first held in 2000 in the city of three helmets. All formats and genres with a playing time of up to 30 minutes are permitted. The event is of a competitive nature: the best films of each genre are awarded by a well-known jury. The competition is particularly worth mentioning Stepping stone for young directors.
  • Strong beer festival
During Lent, the strong beer festival, which is now well known far beyond the city limits, takes place every year on the Emslanderparkplatz in the industrial area. The obligatory fasting sermon is given by cabaret artist Christian Springer, who is well-known throughout Bavaria.
  • Garden festival
Every year at the beginning of May the garden festival takes place at Trausnitz Castle. The usually three-day event has a different motto every year. Around 150 exhibitors then present their contributions on the castle grounds, which attract around 30,000 visitors.
  • Landshut Court Music Days
The Landshuter Hofmusiktage, which was held for the first time in 1982, is also of supraregional importance. The biennial European Festival for Early Music was the first festival of its kind in the 1980s. Initially, music from the Gothic, Renaissance and early Baroque periods was mainly performed, but more recently modern music has also been incorporated. The concept of the initially revolutionary music event has since been adopted in a similar way by many other cities. The Hofmusiktage takes place annually from mid-May to the end of May.
  • Africa days
A weekend in July (in the LaHo years already in June) in Landshut is all about African culture. The visitors are brought closer to the fascinating way of life and culture of the people of Africa. It's about peaceful coexistence and exchange between different cultures.
  • Dult
The popular folk festival takes place twice a year - traditionally on the Grieserwiese near the historic old town. The Spring Dult attracts numerous visitors to the fairground and the beer tent as early as the middle / end of April, the Bartlmädult (namesake Bartolomäus, name day August 24th) takes place during the traditional festival time at the end of August. The dult actually consists of two events: the pleasure dult as a classic folk festival and the market-like sales dult.
  • Haferlmarkt
Every year on a weekend in September, the Landshut Haferlmarkt takes place in the Upper Freyung (in the immediate vicinity of Bavaria's only vocational college for ceramics). The visitor is offered garden ceramics, decoration, a diverse selection of traditional Kröninger ceramics, modern utility ceramics, up to the unusual decorative pottery art, but also simple household pottery.

accommodation
