Deggendorf is a Lower Bavarian City and a major Danube port. Because of its location, the city is also known as the “Gate to the Bavarian Forest”.

background

Deggendorf is an old place. In 1337 all Jews were murdered here. In the Thirty Years' War (1633 and 1638) the city suffered a lot; In 1744 it was sacked by Batthyány and burned by Charles of Lorraine in 1748; In 1822, 211 buildings burned down.

Formerly projectiles, today enjoyment

According to legend, Deggendorf is associated with dumplings. Around 1266 the city was besieged by the Bohemians and food became scarce. The women provided the men on the city wall with dumplings. When a Bohemian tried to climb the city wall, the mayor's wife threw a dumpling at him. When he then told his general that Deggendorf still had enough food to throw at, the troops withdrew. Today the dumpling thrower has a monument with a fountain.
