Gäuboden - Gäuboden

The Gäuboden (also "Dungau") is the level of Danube in the northwest of Lower Bavaria. Because of the extremely fertile loess soils, the Gäuboden is considered to be the "Bavarian Granary".

The Gäuboden, also Dungau is not precisely defined geographically and the approximately 90-kilometer-long Danube plain begins regensburg to Osterhofen and at the feet of the Bavarian Forest. The width is up to approx. 20 kilometers, the altitude averages around 320 to 340 meters.

Characteristic for the intensively used agricultural level are the seemingly endless flat fields and meadows and the complete lack of larger forests.

The word Gäuboden is derived from the Gau from the Middle High German word Göu for level, the Lower Bavarian speaks of "Ghei".

The Gäuboden is on the main line from regensburg to Passau as well as on the Gäubodenbahn from Neufahrn, whose trains continue from Straubing to Bogen or from Neufahrn on Saturdays there is a direct connection from Bogen to Salzburg via Landshut and Mühldorf.

Agnes Bernauerin cake
  • At the Krönner coffee house in Straubing was the Agnes Bernauer cake, a layer cake made from almond-nut-meringue bases filled with mocha buttercream. The cake has had EU protection of origin as a typical regional specialty since 2012.

The climate is classified as a temperate continental climate. The Danube Valley is to the northeast of the mountains of the Bavarian Forest Sheltered from the wind, the Lower Bavarian hill country connects to the southwest. In winter, the cold air settles in the valley, it is considered to be long-lasting cold, the summers with heat build-up are considered warm to hot.

Due to the humidity of the Danube, the flat region is prone to fog in spring and autumn.
