Paphos is a city in the west Cyprus. With one of the two largest airports, it is an important “gateway” for visitors. The historical sites and archaeological finds that date back to the Bronze Age are particularly significant. The Ptolemaic royal tombs, which are part of the world cultural heritage, and the Roman villas with their ornate mosaics are outstanding. In addition, Paphos, which is surrounded by beaches, is also a popular destination for beach tourism and a good starting point for excursions, e.g. B. to the nearby rock of Aphrodite, to the nature reserve of the Akamas Peninsula and the wooded Troodos Mountains inland.

background

Panorama of the Paphos Archaeological Park

Paphos was founded around 1400 BC. Founded in BC and is considered the mythical birthplace of Aphrodite. In Roman times, Paphos was the capital of Cyprus. The ruins of the palace complex with very beautiful mosaics date from this time. The district of Paphos has so many places steeped in history that UNESCO has put the place and its entire area on the list of World Heritage Sites.

Today's Paphos is divided into Pano Pafos, Nea Pafos and the hotel zone in the southeast. Pano Pafos is also called Ktima by the locals and is the capital of the Pafos administrative district. The place is located on a hill and is 2 km from the port.

lighthouse

Until 25 years ago, Nea Pafos was a sleepy fishing village. After the Turkish invasion of 1974 it took off as a tourist center. The renovation of the waterfront has just been completed. The street has been narrowed so that only one-way traffic is possible to the west to the port. Every day from 6 p.m. and all day on Sundays, car traffic is completely excluded, then you are on a wide pedestrian boulevard. Some side streets are also only open to traffic to a limited extent. From the beginning of this boulevard in the direction of the hotel zone, a 5 km long footpath was built right by the sea. Unfortunately, most of the lighting there is already defective again.

At the southeast end of Nea Pafos, one large hotel is lined up after the other until one reaches the public beach of Geroskipou. The main street in the hotel zone is very wide with a slightly raised, wide median that drivers can cross or use as a parking lot.

getting there

By plane

A little outside the city (bus transfer to the port of Paphos 30 minutes) is the international airport of Paphos, which is served by some charter airlines, Eurocypria from Germany, EasyJet from Germany and England. The airport building is new and modern, the entry and exit formalities for EU citizens are simple. There is an ATM in the entry area. When leaving, after passport control and a security check, you have the opportunity to shop "duty-free", which is more expensive than in the local supermarket. There is a cafeteria with e.g. T. very comfortable seating (cappuccino 3.50 euros) and a "beer garden" outside for smokers.

nightlife

In Kato Paphos, the district right by the harbor, you will find many restaurants and bars, some with sports broadcasts. A little further east, where the harbor promenade ends and the main road runs further inland behind the beach hotels, there is a 500 m length of restaurant after bar after restaurant. The next street running parallel to this away from the sea (Agiou Antoniou) is also a pedestrian zone and only partially open to delivery traffic. This street is commonly called "Bar Street" and is also named in some travel guides. There you will find restaurants as well as a number of discos, cellar clubs and bars with GoGo girls. Even in the morning the ladies stand there on the roadside to lure guests into the bars.

Ziele
