Kraków is the third largest city in the country and is located on the River Wisła. It was hardly damaged during the Second World War and is considered the most beautiful historic city in Poland. It is close to the tourist attractions Wieliczka, Zakopane and Auschwitz.

By plane

There is a good and frequent connection to the Netherlands from the airport of Katowice. WizzAir flies from Eindhoven to Katowice Airport daily with cheap ticket prices. Lufthansa flies to Katowice three times a day via Frankfurt. Into the airport Katowice is located 80 km west of Krakow and has a frequent bus shuttle service with the city. Tickets cost 10€ one way and buses are synchronized with the airport on arrival and departure. The companies are Matuszek and Pyrzowice Express. Both have comfortable buses and the journey takes an hour and a half.

In addition, from October 26, wizzair twice a week fly from Maastricht-Aachen to Katowice.

By train

Krakow is easy to reach by train. The most comfortable way is by express train, see also Poland#Tickets.

The central station is called Kraków Główny, within the city it becomes Dworzec Glowny called. From the central station you can walk straight into Planty, Rynek Główny is a 10-minute walk away.

By car

Krakow is easily accessible by car. From Dresden or Berlin you can drive to Krakow in about six hours. In total you will be on the road for about 12 hours. With a nice route or car round trip you can turn the ride into a nice holiday.

By bus

Buses to Krakow run from all parts of Poland.

By boat

It is possible to reach Kraków by boat on the Vistula River.

Travel around

Kraków has an extensive tram and bus network. Tickets are for sale at the kiosks at the stops. Modern trams have ticket machines. There are tickets per journey (no transfers), per hour, per day or per three days. (departure times of tram and bus)

At night, the taxi is the best solution. It is better to order a taxi by phone. barbakan is the cheapest.

To look at

  • wawel, Castle.
  • Stare Miasto, the old town, with in the middle Rynek Glowny, one of the largest medieval squares in Europe. On the square are the Maria Church and in the middle the cloth hall Sukiennice, which now houses many souvenir, gold, silver and art shops.
  • Kazimierz, the old Jewish quarter has seven synagogues and currently has a rapidly expanding nightlife.

It is said that the old town alone has 300 cafés and discotheques. In the Jewish district of Kazimierz you will also fall over the many cozy cafes and terraces. Many cafes have an original design, sometimes they are hidden behind other shops, desks and the like and you don't even see from the street that there is anything there. Safety

Krakow is a safe city. In the city center you regularly see homeless people, who will not bother you. There is a lot of police and city guard. Nowa Huta is safe to visit during the day. Drinking alcohol on the street is not allowed and beware: drunk cycling is just as forbidden as drunk driving. Drugs are strictly prohibited. Tickets are regularly checked on public transport, so it is advisable to buy a ticket. The city guard also checks fairly strictly for running red and crossing outside the zebra crossings.
