Rijeka is a port city in Croatia, at the Kvarner Bay and is the third largest city in Croatia with around 145,000 inhabitants. The port is particularly important for the landlocked countries of Central Europe, especially for Hungary (own free port). For 2020, Rijeka became the title one European Capital of Culture awarded.

Rijeka is stretched along the coast and offers mainly from Opatija a delightful sight, although the cityscape is dominated by some tall prefabricated buildings from the Tito era. Before the First World War, important submarine yards were located in Rijeka and the first torpedoes were developed here.

By plane
- 1 Rijeka airport (Zračna luka Rijeka, IATA: RJK). The international airport is located on the island Krk. It can be reached from Rijeka via a bridge (approx. 25 km). Connections exist inter alia. from Zagreb, Cologne / Bonn, Hamburg, Hanover, Munich, Stuttgart, Berlin, Frankfurt Hahn.

- 2 Rijeka railway station (Željeznički kolodvor Rijeka). There are connections from the train station via Karlovac to Zagreb (3 hours 40 minutes) and about Ljubljana (2 1/2 hours) to Munich and Vienna.
By bus
- 3 Bus station. Regular bus routes connect Rijeka with larger cities in Croatia and other European countries. The bus station for national and international connections is 500 meters from the train station. After another 500 m you will reach the ferry terminal.
A trip to Zagreb costs around 155 knots, a trip to Cres 98 knots, to Veli Losinj 170 knots (as of 2012).
