Opatija (Italian Abbazia, German Sankt Jakobi) is a city in Croatia, Near Rijeka on the peninsula Istria, has about 12,000 inhabitants and is an important tourist center.

The place was one of the most elegant seaside resorts at the end of the nineteenth century ("Austrian Riviera") and is closely linked to the history of the "K.u.k. privileged Southern Railway Company". The director of the railway company, Friedrich Schüler, built the first of a series of luxurious hotels at the beginning of the sixties of the 19th century and in a short time the place developed into a meeting place for the prominent people of the time. Among other things, Kaiser Wilhelm II was often a guest. After the First World War, most of the hotel buildings fell into disrepair and only recently has a rapid upturn been noticed. Opatija is about 15 km northwest of Rijeka and is easy to get to from there by bus.
