activities

  • Visiting the Postojnska Jama Postojna Caves (Adelsberg Grottoes). The small cave train first travels through various underground passages and large halls. The train stops in a very imposing stalactite hall and the visitors are divided into different groups depending on the language. From there you continue on foot with a guide who explains the sights of the caves. Then you continue on a different route by train, then the tour continues on foot. You can visit the underground river and the live cave animals on display. The tour itself takes about 90 minutes. The total length of the show cave is about 5 kilometers. Ride the cave railway 3.2 km, and 1.8 km on foot. A unique, wonderful experience that should not be missed. Here are a few tips for visitors:
  • Despite 90 minutes of viewing time, plan 4-6 hours for a visit as there can be long waiting times in summer and on weekends.
  • The tickets are sold for a specific departure time of the cave railway. This can also be 1-2 hours later if the previous trips are sold out. Ask for departure time before paying.
  • The tickets cost € 23.90 adults / € 14.30 children (as of 02/2017), and an additional "upgrade" for other sights near Postojina is offered, but you don't need it to visit the cave.
  • The ban on photography is not enforced so strictly as long as you snap quickly and inconspicuously and do not stop the group of visitors. Please do not take pictures of the live cave animals on display with flash, as the animals cannot tolerate light.
  • The tunnel runway has no roof and no doors. Therefore, a great all-round view is guaranteed.
  • Do not stand up, lean out, or hold out your arms while taking the cave train. Don't leave fidgety children sitting alone. The stalactites and stalagmites are sometimes only a few centimeters away from the seat while the train whizzes through the underground labyrinth at adventurous speed.
  • Even in midsummer it is only 8-10 C ° in the cave and it is very humid. Appropriate clothing is important. If someone with flip-flops and a tank top goes with them, they are sure to have an unforgettable experience.
  • Bringing a small flashlight is an advantage to illuminate hardly illuminated parts of the path.
  • Not barrier-freeNot barrier-free Despite statements to the contrary by the provider, the caves and the track are unsuitable for wheelchair users.
