background

getting there

Most tourists arrive by car.

By plane

The small Zadar airportZadar Airport in the Wikipedia encyclopediaZadar Airport in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsZadar Airport (Q155359) in the Wikidata database(IATA: ZAD) is about 10 km from the city.

Only Croatia flies from Zagreb and Pula to Zadar all year round. In the summer months, Lufthansa (Frankfurt, Munich), Condor (Frankfurt), Eurowings (Berlin, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Munich, Stuttgart, Vienna), Austrian (Innsbruck), Luxair (Luxembourg) and Ryanair (Berlin) fly from German-speaking countries , Bremen, Frankfurt, Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden, Memmingen, Weeze). As of 2018

There is an exchange office with an unfavorable exchange rate, so it is better to exchange large amounts elsewhere. Even machines do not offer good rates in Croatia. The tourist information office doesn't deserve its name, only a few brochures are on display. There are car rental companies in front of the building and in the departure lounge.

A bus connection to the old town and the bus station suits arrivals and departures.

By train

There is no longer a rail connection for passenger traffic, but there is rail replacement service 3 times a day to Knin. The buses run on the inconspicuous space between the bus station and the tracks here from. It can happen that the minibus is already full and you are therefore not allowed to take it. The bus sometimes reaches its destination approx. 15 minutes early, so you should be there in good time.

By bus

The bus station is quite large. There are buses in all directions and to neighboring countries.

In the street

To travel from Germany by car, there are the following options to get to Zadar. The coastal road (main road), the A1 motorway and the former main connecting road D27 / D502 / D424 between the hinterland and Zadar. The most scenic and previously most frequently used route leads over the Inntal motorway and the Tauern and Karawanken tunnels Ljubljana past, Postojna, Rijeka and then via the main road.

The motorways in Croatia are toll roads.

The most convenient alternative is to drive via Wels and the Phyrntalautobahn, under Graz, via Maribor, past Zagreb on the A1. With the exception of a little bit before Maribor, Austria and Croatia have only a comparatively little-used motorway. Motorway vignettes are required for Austria (10-day vignette € 8.70) and Slovenia (weekly vignette € 15, monthly vignette € 30). In Croatia, a toll of around 170 kuna (approx. € 23) is due for a car on this route. For a team it will be around 265 kuna (36, - €).As of 2015

After passing through the "Sv.Rok" tunnel, the view of the Novigradsko More, the Velebitski Canal and the surrounding countryside is unobstructed.

You leave the motorway at the exit "Zadar 1". In heavy traffic, you don't need to shy away from the detour via the "Zadar 2" exit, as the connecting road D424 is usually less busy.

By boat

The new ferry port is located in 1 Gaženica in a southern part of Zadar. There are still ferry connections from the old town, e.g. to Ugljak. Up to three cruise ships often dock there.

From the ferry port you can get to many of the offshore islands and also to the large port cities of Croatia and Italy on the Adriatic.

You can reach it with a hydrofoil (passenger transport) from the company Miatrade Ancona in Italy in 3.5 hours. The Miatrade agency can be found in the Seetor (the second gate in the fortress wall at the ferry port).

Excursions to the Kornati archipelago are offered on the peninsula and traditionally on both sides of the bridge. Seen from the sea, the marina for the pleasure craft is on the left, where the petrol station can also be found.

mobility

Map of Zadar

The traffic route network is constantly being improved. The "traffic culture" is "typical of the big city". Especially during the tourist season, it gets tight and heated on the streets. Parking spaces for cars are becoming less and less not only in the city itself but also on the beaches.

The bicycle has now become the fastest and most flexible means of transport.

The old town is a pure pedestrian zone. Cyclists caught can expect a heavy fine.

Buildings

The old town contains the most interesting old buildings. It is located on the peninsula in front of the city at the harbor and you can immediately see the old fortress walls. A long bridge leads over the harbor from the new town to the enchanting old town. You walk through the walls through old gates, some of which are splendid.

The buildings that stand out are the old churches, the Franciscan monastery, the Prince's Palace and the small parks to the south-east that are reminiscent of Venetian times. However, it should be said that you can find a wide variety of styles here in the smallest of spaces. This corresponds to this city, which, like all of Dalmatia, has had an eventful history over the past 2000 years.

However, the treatment rooms are absolutely contemporary and of a high western standard. The staff is under a lot of pressure and yet they are experienced, friendly and conscientious.

Practical advice

Many older people and a few boys still speak German. However, the majority speaks English.
