Sopron is a city in Hungary, right on the border to Austria. The largely bilingual city (German name Ödenburg) is located on the Amber Road and was called Scrabantia in Roman times.

The "Pan-European Picnic" took place near Sopron on August 19, 1989, at which the "Iron Curtain" between Austria and Hungary was opened for a few hours for the first time, which several hundred GDR citizens used to travel to the West.

The closest international airports are Airport Wien-Schwechat (70 km), Bratislava (70 km) and Budapest (210 km).

By train

Trains of the Raab-Ödenburg-Ebenfurther Railway (ROeEE / GySEV) connect Sopron every hour Vienna, Departure from Vienna from the main train station and from the Meidling train station. The train journey takes a good hour. The trains stop along the way also in Ebreichsdorf, Ebenfurt and Wulkaprodersdorf (Connection off Neusiedl and Eisenstadt); Train terminus (lettering of the train) is Deutschkreutz. You can buy tickets to Vienna on departure at Sopron train station, payment in euros is possible, ticket sales are right next to the main entrance (not on the left at the normal ticket counters).

Furthermore, there are hourly train connections of the ROeEE from Wiener Neustadt (above Mattersburg) as well as after Gyor / Budapest and after Szombathely (above Bük).

As a corridor station in Austrian train traffic, Sopron is part of the Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region (VOR) and thus trips from / to Austria are available at the network tariff. When traveling from Austria beyond Sopron (or vice versa), it is advisable to check whether a combination of VOR and Hungarian domestic tariff tickets is cheaper than a single ticket.

In the street

  • From Vienna on the A2 to the Guntramsdorf junction, then continue on the A3 to the junction Eisenstadt and via the B16 to Sopron. Arrival time is less than an hour.
  • From Graz on the A2 to the knot Wiener Neustadt, then continue on the S4 bis Mattersburg, there on the S31 to the Eisenstadt junction and from there via the B16 to Sopron.
  • From Budapest via the M1 bis Gyor and from there via the M85 or main road 85 directly to Sopron.
  • From the west end of the Balaton leads over the main road 84 Sumeg and Sarvár directly to Sopron.
  • Sopron is surrounded by the state border in the south, west and north. There are also the following options for local traffic to cross the border with Burgenland (from south to northeast, clockwise):

The price level for food and other everyday products is slightly lower than in neighboring Austria. Nevertheless, since the border was opened in the 1980s, Sopron has been a popular shopping destination for the Austrian population close to the border, which is not so much because of the prices, but because Sopron has now taken on a center function for northern Burgenland, where there are shops that you can buy over the border does not find.

In Sopron, as in the rest of Hungary, the forint is the only official currency. Because of the proximity to the border and the numerous day-trippers from Austria, the euro is also accepted in many shops and restaurants, but at a worse rate than officially.
