background

Győr-Moson-Sopron County was created in the 1920s from the merger of three independent counties. In particular, the counties of Sopron (Ödenburg) and Moson (Wieselburg) had to transfer large areas to the new Austrian federal state, the Burgenlandto resign. The remaining areas were merged into the larger Győr (Raab) county and since then have been run under the new triple name. In a referendum in 1920, a majority of the population of Ödenburg (Sopron) spoke out in favor of staying with Hungary, although the majority of the population was German-speaking at the time. A vote demanded by Austria on the membership of the Waasen (Hanság), that is the area around and southwest of Mosonmagyaróvár (Wieselburg-Hungarian Altenburg) never took place.

language

Hungarian. Many locals speak the English language, but the German language is much more widespread due to the proximity to the border with Austria. A significant minority of Burgenland Croats live in numerous places near the Austrian border.

getting there

By plane

In Pér (at Gyor) and in Fertőszentmiklos there are demand airports that can also accommodate private jets - an expansion for scheduled flights has been planned over and over again, but has not yet taken place. The nearest airports with scheduled services are in Budapest, Vienna and Bratislava.

By train

The railway lines Vienna-Budapest as well Gyor-Sopron-Vienna/Wiener Neustadt lead through the county. In Győr, Mosonmagyaróvár and Hegyeshalom Express trains in the EC / IC / Railjet category also stop. Other important train stations that are served by international express trains are Hegyeshalom (Trains to Bratislava-Petržalka and Szombathely), Csorna and Sopron (Trains to Vienna, Wiener Neustadt, Szombathely and Zagreb).

In the street

The county is also crossed by numerous international highways, almost all of which converge in Gyõr:

  • E 60 (M1 motorway) Vienna-Mosonmagyaróvar-Gyõr-Budapest
  • E 65 Bratislava-Mosonmagyaróvar-Csorna-Szombathely-Zagreb (to Mosonmagyaróvar expressway M15, then trunk road 86)
  • E 75 Bratislava-Mosonmagyaróvar-Gyõr-Budapest (to Mosonmagyaróvar expressway M15, then motorway M1)
  • E 575 Bratislava-Dunajská Streda-Gyõr (trunk road 14)

As well as the important national highways, some of which are or will be expanded as expressways:

Since Hungary's accession to the Schengen area, Austria has had numerous small road border crossings, some of which can be used by cars (not trucks), others only by pedestrians and cyclists. The most important are at Halbturn, Andau, Pamhagen, Mörbisch, Schattendorf, Deutschkreutz, Nikitsch and Lutzmannsburg. The Danube represents an almost insurmountable barrier to Slovakia; you can only reach the northern neighbor at Rajka and over the bridge north of Gyõr.

mobility

In addition to well-developed interurban roads - some of which are motorway standards - there are also numerous cycle paths. As most of the county is flat, cycling is definitely recommended. Public transport runs regularly, especially between the larger towns (bus or train), but it is advisable to have your own vehicle for smaller towns.

  • Pan-European picnic. In August 1989, thousands of GDR citizens seized the opportunity to simply cross the border between Sopron and Sankt Margarethen in Burgenland on their way to the FRG. The iron curtain was only dismantled a few weeks earlier. This was the starting shot for the great political upheavals in Eastern Europe in autumn 1989, including the fall of the Berlin Wall. Today there is a memorial site and a small open-air museum dedicated to the events of the summer of 1989.
