Worth seeing

Eszterháza Castle (also: Fertőd Castle) is one of the largest Rococo castles in Hungary, it is part of the Neusiedler See-Seewinkel - Fertő-Hanság World Heritage Site, and together with the swampy castle park is also part of the national park.

The palace was built at the beginning of the 18th century by Duke Michael Esterházy as a smaller hunting lodge, and in 1764 Duke Nicholas was architecturally and gardenally rebuilt in the style of a Versailles chateau. The renovation was commissioned by the Viennese court builders Johann Ferdinand Mödlhammer and Melchior Hefele, which took 46 years. Most of the building materials used came from the quarry Sankt Margarethen im Burgenland, which was then owned by the Esterházy family.

As a typical Rococo palace modeled on Versailles, it also has great structural similarities to the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna.

Active recreation

  • There are many marked and structurally separate bicycle paths in the region. For example, you can walk all of Lake Neusiedl with almost no traffic (1-2 days) or cycle to other places such as Sopron or Deutschkreutz. The cycle paths are also suitable for less trained cyclists due to the low slopes.
