The village was first mentioned in 1268. Until 1919 it belonged to the Hungarian county Moson, in the Treaty of Trianon it was awarded to Austria and in 1921 became part of the newly constituted federal state Burgenland. From then on it was the rail and road border with Hungary.
With the construction of the Iron Curtain after World War II, the village lost the Hungarian hinterland, and crossing the border was only possible with greater difficulty. It was not until 1990 that it was possible to cross the border by train again. In 1991 a small border crossing for pedestrians and cyclists was opened, which was also opened for cars in 1992. Since then, the community has been an important place in the cross-border national park and Unesco World Heritage Lake Neusiedl-Seewinkel and also interesting for tourists.
Former Austrian President Heinz Fischer attended elementary school in Pamhagen.
